Iphone Waze Audio via cable

We have a 2018 Yaris hybrid. When the iPhone is connected up via the USB cable the Waze Audio announcements are muted although Waze acknowledges the cable and automatically passes the announcements Via connection.  

Unplug the cable and the phone speaker resumes guidance announcements.

Can anyone point me to a solution?
