Well this is bizarre !  Today while Taking Car out of 4x4 mode has allowed the steering at full lock to work easier ! ?

I have a day off today (Monday) and took the Surf back to D&G 4x4. They were the good people who fitted the new Power Steering Rack Mounting Bush Kit and Drop Link Anti Roll Bar & Bushes for the Front which needed doing urgently.

Today, I wanted them to look at more of the Forum's suggestions. IE the TIE ROD ENDS (inner and outer), UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS as these are very important, as another member pointed out, the lower ones just snap if worn.

But Geoff is away from the Shop this week.

What on Earth is going on with this TOYOTA !

Hello Nick, reading that first line about four wheel drive the Surf has part time four wheel drive and is not meant to be permanent and only used on slippery surfaces. Forgive me if I've read it wrong but driving on normal roads in four wheel drive will affect steering and cause untold damage to the steering and transmission.

Hi Tony,

I had left it in 4x4 mode due to the day before the rear wheels span in the rain.

So,  How can I check if the car has sustained Steering and transmission damage ? As mentioned previously I've only recently bought the Car.

Regards,

Nick

Hi Nick, if its driving ok and not making any noises or whining it should be ok. Only use four wheel drive on slippery surfaces and switch it off when you don't need it, It's not designed to be permanent four wheel drive. A permanent four wheel drive has a centre diff which makes all the car wheels turn at the same speed where as the Surf hasn't so the front and back wheels can turn at different speeds hence only to be used on slippery surfaces,  and also make steering difficult.

Thanks for the reply Tony.

I also heard a clunk from front left steering when parking yesterday (Monday)
Moving Car in and out of 4x4 drive I did hear noises and whinning...  But I eventually got it back into 2 wheel drive and the Steering was smoother / easier including full lock...

Moving the small gear lever out of 4x4 drive yesterday took some time to do. While in Park, I did hear noises and whining...  But I eventually got it back into 2 wheel drive and the Steering was smoother / easier including full lock...

I do also hear a vibration pulling away, but I've No idea what that noise is.... drive shaft ?  Gearbox ?

If your unsure let your mechanic take it for a test drive and see what he comes back with.

I've just been to see Geoff at D&G 4x4 Specialists in Leicester. His 4 post lift had a vehicle on it, So my car did not get inspected. Geoff has asked me to find out if anyone sells a Steering Damper for the Toyota Hilux Surf 4Runner 3rd Generation ? It was shaking from the Front again.

That is odd... Geoff today also advised I get the Toyota Surf's Wheel Alignment check done next too. That and replace the Rear Anti-Roll Bushes which I ordered today.

Oh dear, more problems... I had the Toyota Hilux Surf on a Hunter Alignment machine today (Saturday) at 8:30am and the Front Camber, Caster, and Toe are all out on the Front Wheels. Unfortunately I couldn't get it resolved due to the Caster / Camber Adjusters are Seized. I drove back disappointed. Geoff the mechanic will have to undo these.

Nearly two months later...

My 4x4 garage has sorted the Surf !

They replaced a number of parts, Front & Rear Anti Roll Bushes, Steering Rack Bushes, New Rear Wheel bearings, 2 x New Wish Bones, Camber bolts. Having to CUT OFF the Wish Bones and Camber Bolts and replace with NEW allowed them to have the Wheel Alignment done. So the car drives straight but I'm not happy with the driving experience. It is no where near as comfortable as my Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90. You feel every bump in the road, the cab roll is terrible over speed humps.

Does the Suspension need replacing ??

My 4x4 garage replaced my Rear Wheel Bearings on the Surf too. The old ones needed to Pressed Out and New Bearings Pressed In. Then the car was sent for and MOT.

At the weekend I wanted to take a look underneath and Grease all my new shiny parts to help Stop them Rusting from the Salt on our UK Roads.

Annoyingly I found my Cigarette Lighter Power Outlet was no longer working. I cannot find a Fuse for this to check. Any idea how to fix this ?

I find the Surf is very easy to spin the rear wheels. I don't like this. It's something the PRADO does not do as it's always in 4x4 motion.

Thanks

Nick from Leicester – England

However, thinking back… The Front End Still Feels Loose over rough ground,

The steering Column could still be part of the problem, in that a loose slip joint along in the steering column, (which is designed to collapse during a front end collision), develops a small amount of play over time.

The 4WD drive button on a small gear stick next to my Auto Gearbox Lever fails to illuminate a light on the dash when I engage it, but this use to work, Typical.
Why would this fail ? I'm tired of chucking money at this car. please help
