MMT concerns

Hi everyone,

My wife drives a 2013 Aygo which we bought about 18 months ago. I occasionally drive it too.

It has done 32,000 miles with Toyota service history. What we have recently noticed is that the gearbox doesn't seem to know the right year to be in? The car if driven extremely carefully, selects the right years, but it's painfully slow getting up to speed. A spirited take off from stationary works fine until you take your foot off the accelerator. Then it seems not to know if it should go into third of forth gear. It changes up or down depending on how you gently press the accelerator. Now, it may just me, but my wife have noticed it too.

The little car works fine in all other respects, it's just this niggle.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Peter Ling

Hi,

I am not a specialist but this might be a worn clutch disc?

As you may know, the clutch is not longlasting on the Aygo, whether manual or MMT. And the MMT needs to be driven a special way. As it is not a true automatic gearbox (like a CVT on hybrid Toyotas), you have to take care of the clutch. If you crawl along at a very slow pace with an eCVT (Toyota Yaris HSD), it causes no harm. But in a MMT, it makes the clutch slip so it wears it.

Thank you Nicolas.

I know the MMT requires a particular driving technique. Is there a way of positively identifying a warn out clutch? Appreciate your comments Nicolas.

Regards Peter.

We did notice that driving with passengers the problem is more pronounced.

You may be right.

Re the clutch.  My wife had a Citroen C1 (same as Aygo and Peugoet 107) and at around 32,000 the clutch was slipping. The internet should this was a common problem with these cars,  some starting as low as 28k miles.  The official solution was to replace the clutch drive plate with a larger diameter one.  The original clutch fitted to these models was 7" diameter, solution was to put in a 7.5" (or maybe 7.25" - cant remember) which is what used in the Yaris.   Problem solved.   Seems sad that the designers were saving a couple quid each car by fitting smaller clutch only for all the customers having to pick up the tab 30,000 miles down the road - literally.

I presume its the same clutch in yours.

The larger clutch from the Yaris was adopted as a production fix well before the OP's car was produced.

Sorry, I was looking at the age of the OP Avensis 2005.

So that means there is still a problem with the life of the newer Aygo/C1/Pug107 ?????

Hello,

Your car being 'painfully slow getting up to speed' seems to be a good indicator that the clutch is slipping, especially if it is even more striking when you have extra weight with passengers. If the clutch is worn out, normally you can feel it as the increase in revs is not in keeping with the increase of speed.

Again, I am not an expert. I read some issues with MMTs, including on that board, which had nothing to do with the clutch. You should have the car checked. All I know is that:
- having a MMT does not mean the clutch is safe from problems, on the contrary
- a low mileage is not an indicator for some clutches failed quite early

Mk1 Aygos after 2009 are supposedly equipped with a thicker clutch disc. In theory, only the first Aygos (sold before 2009) are affected by weak clutches. But when I check ads on the Internet, many late mk1 Aygos (2013 and 2014) have had their clutch replaced at low mileages.

Hi Mike, Joe and Nicolas.

Thank you for your replies. I guess I have to go to Mr Toyota?

I must say though, the Toyota guys here in Boston are all very helpful. It's too big a job for me to contemplate.

Appreciate all your replies.

Regards

Peter

Hello,

Been years with mmts,, i asure u that my wife can burn the clutch disk in 5 min tryning just to park...so milliage dont matter!

Always the fix is to change disk.I mean the hole set.Thats my experience...not the sensors, not the actuators, not the trans assy ecu,,,just the clutch set(buy a good one)

Toyota swears for safe cars but these mmts, older and newer just get in trubles if u dont drive them like manuals

Thanks Kostas,

Probably will get Toyota to fix it. My son came up I think with a good idea?

What about if you select the gears manually on the paddle shift? Would the clutch slip then? I'm going to try it today. I'll let you know how it goes.

Appreciate all your replies.

I am sorry to say that manually changing gear with the paddle shifts does not help the clutch slip. Rather frightened to ask Mr T how much it's going to cost!

Thanks everyone for their comments and help.

Hello again,

The Aygo has now a new clutch fitted by Listers Toyota Boston. They did an excellent job together with a silver service and M.O.T. very reasonably priced too. The car now drives like it should. I would recommend this Toyota dealership to anyone in the local vicinity. Appreciate all who have commented on this topic.

Regards

Peter
