1991 Celica ZR overheating

I’ve had a few issues with my car overheating. I’ve had the coolant flushed and replaced as the car had been stood a while before I got it but it hasn’t made any difference.

I’ve bought a new thermostat to fit in case that’s the issue but when I popped the bonnet to do it, I noticed that the hose to the top of the rad had collapsed, there appeared to be a vacuum.

I took the cap of and there was clearly a vacuum as air was sucked in and the hose returned to normal.

I’m guessing this could be linked to my problems but, I’m not sure how/why.

Could anybody shed any light on this?
