2AD FTV - head/gasket gone

Hi, new here and hoping someone who had suffered with the 2ad ftv known engine problem might be able to offer advice.

OK, admission of guilt I'm an idiot. New to Toyota's and bought a car without doing the proper research. Done it many times before and been ok. Buy at the right price and get anything nasty fixed. How bad can it be!!. Bought a nice tidy Rav 4 08 2.2d4d nice and cheap expecting problems. On drive home heater refused to blow warm - coolant leak/ head gasket. Not concerned at this point head off new gasket and skim £600 ish still got a cheap car. Checked the next day header full of oil. Right get it sorted. Usual mechanic wont touch it too busy. Go to local Toyota specialist. £1600 min could be as much as £2400. Cheap car but £2400 makes it a write off.

Time to get some research done. Now fully aware of the 2ad engine issues. The car hasn't had any previous work under warranty and now it has failed.I see my options as follows;

1 - get some one willing to take off head and do the work. not easy as at the moment cant find anyone willing to take it on. Open cheque book that could go as high as £2500.

2 - Replace the engine  - a massive can of worms. Easy to find dodgy operators willing to throw an engine in for £1400. Can't find an accredited engine re-manufacturer who can offer the 2ad engine apparently it is that bad it has been classified as uneconomical to recondition. Get engine from breaker?.

3 - Get a quote from breaker to scrap the car and take the hit. Apart from needing a spring and a couple of tyres the rest of the car is very tidy.

Anyone else been in this position?.

Anyone know of a Toyota engine specialist who could be relied on to do the work?.

Seems a massive shame to scrap a tidy car, but the engine problem is making this a border line case.

Bought my 2007 Rav4 2.2 D4D at 4 years old, like you, not aware of the 2AD-FTV issues. 2 years later took my car in for annual service from Toyota dealer i bought car from, said i had coolant leaking issues.  Toyota came back and said i needed new engine, but do not worry Toyota paying.  Lucky me.

The engine replacement is a 3/4 unit.  I believe the issue was poor design of the pistons, this is why only a 3/4 engine replacement.  Toyota would not do a recall on this problem but carry out a fix if/when the engine failed.  My car had only done 36,000 miles when engine failed.  Now at 76,000 miles and engine running great.

If, as i believe, the piston design was the cause of engine failure just be sure this is addressed on any work you have done.

Toyota had a goodwill arrangement to cover the head gasket/oil consumption issues of the AD series engine. This was for a period of 7 years/111,846 miles from first registration, whichever occurred first. It is thought only a small percentage of engines were affected. See

Catseye27's car was within the goodwill period when the issue occurred. DVSA recalls only occur where the issue is safety related, and head gasket failure isn't safety related. The original fix was for dealers to rebuild engines, but, as this wasn't always successful, Toyota used factory 3/4 engines instead.

However all vehicles are now outside the goodwill arrangement.

As regards skimming the head, this wasn't recommended by Toyota - hence the use of replacement 3/4 engines being used under the goodwill arrangement. A few owners have since had the head gasket repaired, but little feedback on how successful this has actually been.

Did you buy the car from a dealer - whether Toyota, other franchise or independent - and within the last six months? If so you may be covered under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 regardless of any warranty issued by the garage. See 'the first six months..' of: https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/consumer-rights-act

Bought the car cheap sold as seen aware there would be problems. Wasn't aware how bad this engine is.

I think the only sensible solution is throwing a engine in from a breakers. Considering getting one from after 2009 as it seems the problem was solved/reduced after this production date. Question for the techies, this engine has more power but is still numbered 2ad ftv will it fit in a 2008 without problems?.

I think that it will depend exactly which engine/year you try to fit  - iirc there were changes to injectors, connectors etc. during it's life & that potentially even may mean a different ECU. Devon Aygo would probably be your man for info. so hopefully he will see & post in thread.

Found a 2011 engine in a breakers. It comes bare so will need all injectors turbo etc switching over. Looks like I need to get to the bottom of are all 2ad ftv engines the same. Hopefully there is someone with this knowledge on here. Finding an 08 (or earlier) engine and fitting it seems pointless given the known faults.

Having had 2 Avensis with 2AD-FTV (a 57 plate & a 61 plate), both nominally 150bhp, I know that as complete units they aren't identical, there are differences over it's life. Your 2011 probably also was fitted with a DPF.

As I said, Devon Aygo is probably your man.
