D4D coolant drain

Trying to drain the coolant out of the radiator and I can't get to any of the hoses as the engine bay is absolutely packed.

I can only see what looks like a bolt plug on the bottom of the radiator but it's a huge Allen key bolt made of plastic, is this the drain plug?

Also a have a hose coming off the top of the radiator reservoir which doesn't seem to go anywhere, is this normal?

It just dangles down next to the rad

Cheers

Hey,

The hose that leads nowhere from the reservoir bottle is there for a reason - if there's too much coolant in the reservoir/expansion bottle, the excess coolant gets spewed out by that hose. It's by design.

I think the proper way to drain the coolant on these cars is by unscrewing one bolt on the back of the engine. This is done with the car lifter up and the underside plastic protection removed. I can't get the service manual now but if nobody else posts till then I can find it once I have access to my laptop. It's also important to be careful with this bolt since if you cross-thread it, it'd bad news since the drain bolt goes directly into engine block.

Thanks for the reply byzii.

The service manual instructions would be really helpful.

Any idea what the Allen key bolt is at the bottom of the rad, I can't think of what it could be unless it's a drain point!?

Do you know your engine code? There's 1CD-FTV and 1AD-FTV for the 2.0 versions, and 2AD-FTV and 2AD-FHV for the 2.2 versions.

I've sent you a message with a link to Google Drive with the PDF of the cooling system for Avensis 2nd generation. Loads of good stuff there but on page 28 you'll find the coolant replacement procedures. Find out your engine code and you'll be good to go.
