Mirrors coded to car?

My brother, in a 13 plate Yaris, cracked the housing on his n/s mirror. The glass is fine, and he's improvised a clear cover for the repeater, so ok for now.

His regular garage chap told him not to go to a scrapyard for a replacement, as the mirrors are somehow coded to the car.. does this sound at all plausible? I've not heard of it before, and on my 06 Corolla it's definitely not the case.

I think he means the painted part is colour CODED to the car, the mirrors are not coded into the car like some sort of programming

Given the collection of scratches and scuffs (active life!), he probably wouldn't be too fussed on an exact colour match anyway.
