Doing some research on new cars, Looking at a Avensis T270 which I will use as a Taxi. Will be getting a 1.8 or 2.0 ltr petrol which I am not aware of any issues (please let me know if im wrong) but I would like a Auto box and wondering if there are any issues/problems.

Many Thanks

I couldn't find any horror stories about them when I researched before buying mine a few years ago. I still haven't heard of any.  It's a cvt auto so it's revvy, especially on hills at motorway speeds.

The 1.8 valvematic has about the same power as the 2.0 btw, but with better economy.

The cvt afaik is very, very reliable but expensive to fix should it go wrong - possibly because it is so reliable that there aren't enough failures for anybody to have specialised in them & built up knowledge. Usually they just get replaced rather than fixed (hence the cost).

Thank you for the responses, I know autos are not as common as the manuals but for Taxiing I do think its a no brainier(driving around town, constantly slowing down for speed ramps etc). Also no Clutch/Duel Mas flywheels to replace then they go.

Would I be correct that you need to a Drain and Fill or Trans flush every 30/50K?

Having a 1,8 manual myself for lots of urban work i would agree. The manual has, imo, little torque low down & a high clutch. Iirc HonestJohn's favourite version of the Avensis was the 1,8 CVT.

iirc it's more like 150k but I could be wrong
