What's this thing for?

I was checking over the Yaris before its MOT and I wondered what the metal plate, spot welded to the RH side of the spare wheel well is for. It's got a threaded stud sticking out of it, two threaded holes with a larger, plain hole between the threaded holes.

Anyone any idea?

Possibly. I've come across asymmetrical tow bar fittings before, but I don't think this looks substantial enough.

How many other people have now peered under the back of their Yaris?

This is a picture from an American Youtube video about fitting extra anti-roll and chassis strengthening gubbins to their version of a Yaris.

Ignore all that, it has a great lump of...? hanging from the wheel well.

Perhaps some anti-smog, exhaust evaporative thing for US markets, similar brackets would never have been put on a French made body, would they?

Just a thought.

Could be bracket for adblue tank, for diesel version, if it's uses it.

The French plant did supply the US market  with the Yaris hatchback - now discontinued, to be replaced with a Toyota version of the Mazda 2 hatchback.

Yes, it looks like it could be the RH mounting for that black lump. Mine's also got a tiny exhaust back box.

I suspect it's the housing for an optional flux capacitor.
