2016 Auris Luna Hatchback 1.4 Diesel, 6 speed manual transmission

Hi, Guys/Gals. I'm sorry if this topic was all ready covered?

Hi, this is my situation. I own a 2016 Toyota Auris 1.4 Diesel, 6 speed manual..

1fst & 2nd gear are very stiff/crunch through touch, but there is no crunch sound coming from the gearbox. Gears seem a lot smoother when engine is at optimal temperature with the very occasional crunch from 2nd gear only if the revs are high going from 1fst into 2nd gear

There is 8000 km left until the warranty is up on my car. I have brought the car to Toyota and they done tests and found nothing wrong. I have attached the report below.

In my meeting with the Salesperson at Toyota after they gave me the report. I said my previous 2003 Toyota Corolla gears feel better and I'm not imaging this and asked what about a transmission oil change? They said they only change oil in Automatic transmissions, which now I think is a false claim.? . I also asked what if I get a 2nd opinion, there reply to that was we only have to recongnize opinion from a Toyota technician??. Is this true/the law?

So I would gladly if you could help out with this situation please

Kindest Regards

Jer

I forgot to add, that the gears I mentioned are not stiff when the car is stationary.

My one query was why talk to the sales person rather than service, who would know more about the servicing aspects?

As regards getting a second opinion, if done outside the dealer network, one has to bear in mind that it is only an opinion. Toyota will want its own dealer network to identify whether there is an issue or not, and doesn't need to use external advice. The same applies to any other manufacturer.

Presume the car has the remainder of the 3 year/60,000 mile new car warranty.

Could try another Toyota dealer.

Thanks for  your reply Frostyballs, sorry it was the service guy not the sales person!.

So just say for an example, say I get a registered mechanic to write up a report saying the synchros are worn and Toyota say they are not. Where does that leave me?

Yes still under the warranty you just mentioned.

As I said for the warranty, Toyota will want their own dealer network to identify the issue. Otherwise it is one opinion against another.  I'd either get the technician at the dealership to accompany you on a test drive, where hopefully the issue will become apparent, or try another Toyota dealer.

The paper says test drove with customer, is this true? If not, i'd go back and demand they repeat the test.

Thanks for  your reply Furtula, yes a test drive was done with me.. Also a cold start test drive was done the following day without me.

I'd have the test drive when cold be done with customer, so they can acknowledge the problem, which you said is present when cold only.

Maybe drop off the car there and come the next day for a drive.

Maybe try to contact Toyota uk directly and ask to step in and help. In many cases when the problem it’s not so obvious and expensive to repair the garage will try any possible way to avoid any warranty work, they will refuse no matter what you are saying but you have to be tough and push them to the limit . If you believe that the synchros are worn you can ask to change the oil and test the oil for metal fragments of the synchros material. This is not true that oil doesn’t need changing, any oil in any application in any machine will need change at some point. Did you bought the car brand new , delivery mileage, if not check the mileage it’s real, many new cars in UK are clocked and this is happening in the first 3 years , sometimes even dealers can’t track it, but this is another topic. Don’t let them avoid fixing your car if the car has really a fault.

Just now, TonyHSD said:

It would be Toyota Ireland, not Toyota GB.

Ops, Toyota Ireland yes, thanks for that. 👍 Once I had problems with a nearly new car bought from Toyota dealer and they told me to contact directly Toyota uk and they will redirect me to the nearest dealer, for him maybe the dealer that is willing to help. I think maybe another dealer not the one he bought the car from originally.

Thanks TonyHsd for your informative reply! I bought the car "used" from a car dealership not a Toyota Dealer. Yes it does feel like I'm getting the cold shoulder regarding doing any work to the car under warranty..

The symptoms I'm describing does it sound like synchros or some other problem ? because I'm not car savy in anyway and I would like to get every bit of information  so I can tell theToyota technician what else to check.

I have also noticed if I keep my foot on the clutch for 1 to 2 seconds longer it goes into gear easier.

Does the issue happen in all gears, or just 1st and 2nd?

I had similar issue on my old car, changed the oil, only made the thing worse, changed oil again, it was a bit better, but in both cases, when cold, the crunch was there in all gears, not just 1st and 2nd.

Problem is in the synchros, question is, is it due to the oil, or the 1st/2nd gear ones actually being worn.

I don't think you should be getting a crunch from 1st to 2nd, even at  higher rpm's, unless you are shifting with a big delay, causing the rpm's to drop a lot, let's say 1k or more.

Thanks Furtula, Just 1fst and 2nd gear. No at normal to high rpm but it doesn't happen all of the time.. Im wondering was there any need for a 6 speed gear box in such a small engine, maybe a Toyota flaw?

The petrol 1.33 Yaris, Auris, IQ, and Urban Cruiser all had a six speed gearbox. I had two 1.33 Auris and our current Hyundai i20 1.4 also has a six speed. No issues with either.

Think you just need to be polite and to the point.

Explain what is happening as regards the transmission, whether it is all the time or intermittent, and outline what has been done to date. Highlight that you're still having issues, and ask whether Toyota could provide a specialist to come out and assess the situation.

At the end of the day, you want some help from them and want to keep them on your side, so it won't be useful to your case to be critical or angry.
