Oil fill cap puffing smoke

Hello there,

I am considering buying a 2007 Avensis with 270k km, 2.2 Diesel 150 HP. The car looks and feels really good except for the strong puffs of blue smoke which come out of the oil fill cap if I open it while the engine is idling.

Should I be concerned about this and avoid the car? Should I expect expensive repairs in the near future because of this?

Thank you

From what i remember, the 2.2 one is not really the most reliable to begin with.

Strong puffs of smoke from inside the engine might mean bad compression on some cylinder, so part of the exhaust gets vented into the engine, this should indicate bad/worn piston rings, and this is an expensive and time consuming repair. I guess this might be the reason they are selling it.

I would personally avoid the car.

These engines are known for interstellar mileages unless it is one of the faulty ones with oil burning, which results in head gasket failure and probable destruction of the block. This issue is most likely to be the injector seals which are also a known issue. Toyota modified the design to make them more durable. One clue is a hissing sound from inside the cam cover when engine running and oil cap off. Watch out for oil spray if you do that though....
You can buy a new set of seals from T for about 20 quid, getting the injectors out is another issue entirely, and personally I'd leave it to a specialist, and I do mean a specialist. These injectors get properly wedged in.

You should ask the dealership to fix it before buying and if that is not ok then forget it. And if the seller is private person, forget it right away.

I don´t want to be cruel but head gasket replacement will certainly happens too, sooner or later.

Yes, at this stage if the HG fails, the car is scrap. Mine is on 233k miles and although it's a 2.0 and failure is much rarer, at some point it will go, and so will the car, straight to the scrap.
