why is an engine's rpm high when starting off?

I've noticed that my 2013 Auris 1500cc has high rpm when starting off.

It happens when the engine is turned off for a period of time or when it's cold.

rpm goes up to 3~ with loud noise and the car does not accelerate normally.

This high rpm state remains for around 3~5mins then drives normally.

not sure if it's normal when it seems like a problem.

I'd be interested to know what's happening here mechanically?

Your car appears to be a CVT auto. In which case the transmission would appear to be slipping (the engine rpm is fluctuating widely, but the road speed is not changing much).

A slipping CVT will quickly destroy itself so I would take it to a dealer ASAP.

It's hard to say from the video, but it looks like you are giving it gas and then letting go of the pedal?

Or are you keeping your foot constant on the gas pedal, in the video from 0:10?

I let it go at 0:12 but keep it constant afterwards.

Accel is very sensitive at the start as seen on video but normally rpm would go up to 1500~2000 if same pressure is applied.

Now that aint normal for sure. I dont think the CVT is slipping, that would make very ugly noises, and your gearbox would be totally ruined!!

The way CVT and engine manegement works, is to heat up the gearbox and oil as fast as possible. To do that, the engine uses higher revs when beeing cold, and drops down to normal after a few minuttes.

Your revs is way to high, and still nothing is happening. Acceleration is weak, revs are high, thats not right. Maybe, just maybe, the software has gone bad, and needs a reset or reinstall. Any way, take the car to the garage as soon as possible.
