Whining noise from gearbox

Hi all.

i will be honest in saying I joined this page for some advice. I have a 2014 1.33 6spd manual Yaris. I absolutely love the wee thing but it has developed a whine from the gearbox in 3rd and 4th. Also occasionally it just won’t engage 1st gear without pumping the clutch.

Now the noise is very faint and doesn’t start until about 20 minutes of driving but only gets louder after that. I’ve had it into my local dealer and they are telling me that everything is fine. Looking at the mileage before and after dropping the car off they haven’t even driven for 10 miles in the car before coming to their conclusion.

Has anyone experienced this or am I going insane like the dealer is trying to insinuate.

Thanks for any any help and advice.

Do you still have your warranty, and when does it expire?

You should insist on drive with their technician in order for them to acknowledge the issue,

The warranty is up in September.

The tech acknowledged the noise but didn’t think it was anything abnormal and was not concerned about it. Now if he can give me another car that makes the noise I would accept that. My issue is I have had the car for almost a year and have never heard the noise before and now over the last few weeks I have this whine and not always clearing first gear.

They are just avoiding the problem until the warranty expires, either insist on it being fixed, contact Toyota directly, or try another dealer.

What you experience is not normal, especially since the car is just 5 years old.

I did think that but the next dealership is over 120miles away. I have asked them to let me drive other cars with the same engine/gearbox set up but apparently they didn’t have any onsite even though there website advertises 5 for sale?!

I would contact Toyota directly first thing in the morning and explain the issue.

They will probably persuade the dealer to take another look.

The issue will probably just go worse with time if not fixed soon, could be a bad bearing, but also low oil level in gearbox, which could also explain problems first 1st gear, just a guess anyway.

I am hoping it’s going to get worse in the next month or so before the warranty is up. I can see it now going in after the warranty and then telling me I need a set of box bearings.

The Tech was determined that Toyota boxes don’t go wrong and kinda made me feel stupid for trying to say there was a fault.

I will be calling Toyota in the morning to see what they say.

I am still curious to see if anyone else has had any issues with noisy 6spd boxes though and what the outcome was.

Furtula thank you for all your help and advice so far.

Hi David.

Yes you may have a bearing wearing out so if I were you i'd get a 2nd opinion, preferably from a specialist transmission garage, just a local specialist.

I was just wondering have you crunched the gears at all between gear changes in which case you may of chipped a gear in the gearbox.

Has the gearbox oil level been checked recently, even better has it been changed recently and if so make sure it was the correct oil used regardless of the price.

Last thought is might be the clutch release bearing so see if you can replicate the noise by lightly pressing the clutch pedal a little whilst you are driving and see if the sound returns.

Good luck, Mike.

Hi Mike,

i have not crunched any gears but I have only had the car a year with one owner before me. I got the car at just over 13k miles.

As far as I’m aware the level has been checked by the garage today and they say it’s fine. Also I have no idea if the oil has ever been touched.

I did think about it being the release bearing but it’s only in 3rd and 4th gear. If it was the release bearing would I not have it in all gears?

Hi David.

Yes you are correct in saying if it was the clutch release bearing it would be in all gears.

I really suggest you get a 2nd opinion from a transmission specialist garage, just Google your nearest one and get the car, mileage wise, to a point when it makes the noise before you arrive to save them a very long road test.

If you don't know when you depress the clutch pedal it puts a horizontal loading on the gears/bearings but a decent transmission specialist will diagnose this.

Good luck, Mike.
