Underground_D 0 Posted July 25 Hey Everyone, On searching the web and this forum, I can find the issue I am having in 4.1 and 4.2 models, however I'm not finding much on it occurring with the 4.3 generation. I have a 2009, petrol, 2.4 l, 5 speed manual, Rav4. The issue I am having is that 5th gear won't stay engaged (it'll pop out to neutral) when power applied unless I hold it in with my hand on the gear stick. From my searching, I can see this was a common issue on 1st and 2nd gen gearboxes. So I have a couple of questions for more knowledgeable folks: Is the gearbox the same on the 3rd generation Ravs as is on the 1st and 2nd? I.e. 5th gear can be accessed with dropping the whole transmission etc Has anyone with a 3rd gen Rav also had this issue? Will the fixes posted for 1st and 2nd gen models work with 3rd gen? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
Catlover 310 Posted July 25 Just a general point, I had a problem holding a gear dropping out back in the 1970’s. I had a Hillman Avenger. I had to strip the gearbox and replace the synchro rings. Don’t know if that is the way you read to sort the problem with the 1st and 2nd generation Rav models. Was’nt an easy fix obviously.
Avalon 12 Posted July 25 The 4.2 up to a certain build date had an issue with 5th gear, beyond that date, it’s not the same issue and would need investigating accordingly.

Does that also apply to non-UK cars with the 2.4L engine? I don't know whether we have much experience of that configuration on the UK forum ... though I could easily be wrong! 😉
Underground_D 0 Posted September 30 Hi Everyone, Just for folks info: Being a novice at doing mechanical work, but understanding the theory and with tips from the mechanics at work, I gave removing the fifth gear repair, described for the 4.1 and 4.2 gen models, a go, as it was a cheaper option than going straight to the shop. I had the gear, sleeve and synchro case to replace. However, on the removal of the casing I discover a bit of synchro spring where it shouldn't be, so that could be my problem. I am awaiting delivery of that part to, fingers crossed, fix the issue. If not a trip to the shop and bye bye dollars awaits. Dan
