Braking surge

Can anyone please help? I had a Toyota Avensis 2011 which suddenly had a braking surge issue. I took it to several mechanics including a main dealer and no one could find the problem. We were advised by Toyota to bring the car back and we now have a Toyota Auris 2015 which appears to have the same fault. Whilst you might be thinking it’s my driving, I’ve driven other family automatics with no problems whatsoever. I would be hugely grateful if someone could put my mind at rest and tell me if there actually is a fault within the Toyota System.

Hi,  Welcome to the Toyota Owners Club.

Just to get a better idea, what were/are the engine, model types and approximate mileages of the two cars mentioned?

Have they always exhibited these problems since you have owned them?

Have you any other details about when and how the fault manifests itself?

Car 1 (1800 Avensis)- 33000 miles

Car 2 (Auris 1.2)- 8000 miles

Both cars intermittently have shown this problem since we have purchased them.

The brake gives a slight surge and then roars loudly. This occurs when braking to a halt.

Do you mean it squeaks? Or can you explain the issue in greated detail, does it usually happen at slow speeds while going to full stop, or even at higher speeds, etc.

Does the car shudder when doing this?

No the car doesn’t squeak it makes a roaring noise.

It usually happens at a slow speed going to a full stop, haven’t known it happening going from a fast speed to a full stop.

The old car shuddered but the new one hasn’t so far.
