Clutch on A/C Compressor

the clutch on my a/c compressor has gone but I cannot remove the clutch from the compressor to replace it. I have already snapped a ‘Snap On’ 7mm socket trying to undo the nut. Do you have to dismantle the whole compressors? Is the main body of this nut set inside the compressor? I cannot understand why the part can be sold separately if I cannot remove the faulty piece from the body of the compressor. Anyone  out there know the answer.? Could it be that you loosen it clockwise instead of anti clockwise...I might have been tightening instead of loosening.
