Pre-2006 engines had a bit of a reputation for burning oil.

To be clear, you have a 2010 Avensis, T27 shape, which has the 1.8 Valvematic engine. The engine has dual VVTi with variable lift on the inlet valve to control the amount of air/fuel mixture. The inlets act as the throttle.
I would guess that one or more valve stem seal is letting by, or the breather system is sucking oil. Has the engine had an oil change service, and what grade oil? Too much oil could also be an issue! How many miles the car done?
Now if your car was pre 2005, then I would agree with MrFixer.

Thanks Mike. I was too focused on the other aspect of the OP's description.

Can I add that the OP should check the spark plugs to see if they are oily. I would not expect the engine to be smokey, unless it had been abused and neglected. My 2009 Valvematic is at 86.000 miles and runs perfectly. The only smoke coming out the exhaust is condensation. The OP could be very unlucky.

First of all what year is this car? Until 2009 there has been piston ring issues on 1.8 liter engines.
