I have the same car. I commute 100 miles a day, nearly all on the motorway. I set the cruise at around 65mph and I get around 60mpg(via an app). If I go up to 75mph it goes down to around 54mpg. Around town I get about 38-40mpg. When its cold I get a little less. Your figures sound a little low, but I could probably get them if I pushed the engine harder. It is not the most economical diesel engine. I had a VW Passat 2.0 tdi for a while and I averaged 75mpg on the same journeys.

Check the usual things, first. See if your brakes are binding, after a decently long run in the car, fifteen minutes or more, carefully touch the alloy or steel of the wheels and make sure that none are hot to the touch, just warm. BE CAREFUL. Binding brakes can easily cause enough heat in the wheel to burn you. Check that you don't have a lot of unnecessary weight in the car cabin and the boot. Check how heavy your right foot is. Harsh acceleration and braking consumes a lot of extra fuel, as does speed. Most people's heavy fuel consumption is because of poor driving habits.
