We're going to need a lot more info such as:

Are there any other codes to accompany this or is that the only code? Also what mileage and has it been serviced regular? Has the car just failed the mot? Does the car run smoothly?

P0420 is cat efficiency below threshold its either one of the two O2 sensors or a plugged cat but can be caused by other factors

you need to check the readings from the O2 sensors and/or check the sensors with a Multimeter as well as read, short and long term fuel trims also check the coolant temp via obd2
