Removing Radio

Hi all,

A while ago I posted about how the rear left and right channels of the radio had been wired in the wrong way round at the factory so I thought it's about time I had ago at sorting it out.

It's the standard fit Sony double-din unit on a 98 GLS.

I've taken off the bit of black plastic trim that surrounds the unit (well actually it pops off of it's own accord quite frequently) but I can't see how to get the actual unit out, I have pulled it, got my hand in behind it by taking the ash tray out and tried to tug it out from there but it is in rather firmly.

Are there any screws or clips that are holding it in as I can't figure out how to get the thing out.

Cheers.

I wish I knew the answer as I'd like to take mine out to check the connections, it's the same type of rradio/cassette/DVD. My problem is that the display appears and disapperas at random.

My Avensis isn't fitted with the Sony unit unfortunately so I cannot check for myself but you will probably find that there are two very narrow slots - one on the left and one on the right side of the front panel. You will need something that you can fit into the slots to release it. I believe Halfords sell such a tool if you can't fabricate anything to do this yourself.

Alternatively, if it doesn't have the slots then it must be the type with four holes - one pair on the left corners of the front panel and one pair on the right. Again you will have to fabricate something to fit these holes (a coathanger worked for my old Ford unit). :)

To remove the sony double-din unit you have to pull the whole center console trim out to do this I remove the ash tray and pull on the bottom of the trim , the trim is held in on 6 clips (very tight ) once it is remove you can see the frame that holds the rdaio to the dash (4 phillps head screws) remove these and radio drops out very easy once you have done it once!

Hope this helps :)

James with all that messing about why don't you get rid of those cheap nasty speaker's that came with a 98 gls and maybe fit an aftermarket headunit as well :)

You are spot on about these awful Speakers, and to make it worse they rivet them in!

The Speakers are fairly crap, but i'm not going to replace the head-unit, those double din sony ones that are in are £400 so must be reasonable, the only reason i wanted to take it out is because some dum-twit at Burnaston plugged the rear Speakers in the wrong way round so right is left and left is right etc.
