Clunking noise when going over potholes

Recommended Posts

I have a 2007 Toyota Auris  TR 1.6L 90k mileage.

Over a year ago we started noticing a clunking noise (as though something is loose) that occurs when going over speed bumps and potholes. It doesn’t happen on motorways. It makes a similar sound occasionally when reversing on flat surfaces. These may be two separate issues. The noise has gotten louder within the last year. We have taken it to two separate mechanics neither of whom have managed to diagnose it. We have just had both front suspension arms fixed thinking that may be the issue but the noise continues. It is hard to tell whether the noise is coming from the front or the back. Any suggestions are welcome.

Has it has any exhaust work done ?? First thing that springs to mind are droplinks or a bad lower engine mount

Had you checked the coil springs on the suspension. My RAV4 and Yaris all developed a clunking noise when going over speed bumps or potholes. The end tip at the bottom is normally corroded and break off. It is not visible without closer look with the wheel taken off.
