Replacing Boot Light

I want to change the boot light bulb on my 2017 Auris Hybrid but there appears to be conflicting information on the web and owners handbook.  Do I prise the cover away from the side panel or do I have to remove the side panel and gain access from the back of it?

The back of the light fitting looks like this (these pictures are actually from our car):-

I changed the bulb 3 years ago, I seem to remember that the fitting will come out from the front, but it was stiff, and the clear plastic appears brittle.

I had this trim out to do something unrelated.

This guide seems useful, it's for a Yaris, but the unit looks identical, but mounted upside down:-

I'm not sure if this answers your question!

From what I remember when replacing the existing festoon lamp, with a l.e.d. equivalent (Yaris), it wasn't necessary to remove any trim. The complete light unit prised out from one end by using a small screwdriver after wrapping it's blade in tape. Unplug the connector, remove the opaque plastic cover and change the lamp. Refit is reverse etc..

The above is assuming the same arrangement and light.

I check my car - Avensis Tourer 2009. The cars share the same part. To remove the fitting, I used a trim tool. A flat bladed screwdriver should suffice. Insert the tool to the end closes to the seat, then carefully lever out. You need to push against the tab, but don't use too much force.

I checked the part number to confirm they are the same, before demonstrating removal.

Thanks to all who have responded.  I'll try prising it with a flat baled screwdriver covered in cloth with due care as mentioned and let you know how it went.

What type of bulb is used in the booth?

The bulb is a double ended 12v 5w, and known as C5W.

Toyota part number shows as 90981-WE003.

I put a LED one with a heatsink last year. It's much brighter, you can actually see clearly what's in the boot.

If you want to replace it, you need to measure it's length, i think the boot one is 34 or 36mm.

I managed to access my boot light on a 2017 Auris exactly like the photographs above.

The handbook said the bulb is a double ended yet mine is single ended as show below.

Thanks for everyone's help

It says on the bulb, its W5W, they are most often used for dome lights, parking and license plate lights.

Whilst I was looking at other things on my car (Avensis T27) for the forum, I checked the boot light and got the following photos.
20200206_134901.thumb.jpg.244166eb32e9cdf4f216670d98c6b7da.jpg  20200206_135405.thumb.jpg.9e76aaf3469c88f1aab593a9859f9794.jpg

The bulb is 1½" (40mm) in length. The one I had shown in my earlier post is not the correct length. For those wanting to use LED this might help. It's always best to check the bulb in person before buying replacement, especially if information for different models are conflicting!

Thanks for responses. I measured today, in my 2014 Auris it's the C5W, 39 mm.

You are having trouble removing the bulb?  What sort of connection?  Is it a bullet type with a connection at each end?  Or is it a push in?  If it the former it should be easy, so I would say it is a push in.  Therefore, what you can do is stick sellotape to either side the bulb to form a piece that you can get your fingers onto to pull.

i wonder if the OP really means he's having difficulty removing the light fitting from the boot trim, rather than in extracting the bulb from the fitting itself.

I was replying to the post by Raymond Deane. The OP was made Feb 2020 and the OPoster has not been on the forum for 7 months.

Good morning

catlover no I can’t get the complete unit out and I don’t want to force it,so any suggestions on how to remove it would be welcome.

I just did this when trying to change to a LED 501 bulb? It takes a few tries but a thin flat head screwdriver can be used to prise it open. It took me a few goes. Its quite stiff to change as opposed to the other interior lighting but it will open eventually.
