Advice for a new Aygo owner

Am planning on ordering a new Aygo x-trend over the next couple of weeks to take advantage of the Toyota diesel scrappage offer and interest free credit deals at the moment. Any advice for a new owner. Haven't ordered it yet but will do it by the end of the month. Just going for it with no extras accept for silver paint job.

Hi Paul,

I just ordered my x trend too for the same reasons. I opted for the Toyota protection pack as I wanted the boot liner and the rear mud flaps to try and keep some of the muck off the back screen.

Good move going for a purchase at the end of the month. I hear it’s a good time especially if targets need hitting and every sale counts, so you may be able to get a good discount or some extras thrown in.

Just bear in mind that Toyota Finance only offer PCP's rather than HP. If a PCP suits you, fine.

Thanks everyone. Might try for some extras but the dealer seems reluctant as I'm getting the £2,000 scrappage and the interest free pcp. Do mudflaps really help? If so I can pay for them myself if the dealer won't throw them in. Are they worth it or is it just cosmetic?

Also it seems to me that pcp is pretty much the same as HP or have I got that wrong. Am planning to pay the lump sum at the end of the finance and keep the car. Is there something I'm missing about the finance that I should know about?

Will they tie me in to servicing the car at an official Toyota dealer with the pcp finance deal?

PCP's provide lower monthly instalments, but have the balloon payment (guaranteed future value) at the end of the agreement. PCP's also have an annual mileage limit - if at the end of the agreement one has exceeded the mileage, you may incur extra costs.

Whereas HP has higher monthly payments, but no balloon payment at the end. With both, the car isn't yours until the final payment is made.

Whatever suits you.

PCP's won't tie you into Toyota servicing.

However, under Block Exemption and to keep the new car warranty valid, it has to be serviced at a VAT-registered garage at the required service intervals. In the event of a warranty claim which is dependent on correct servicing, the onus is on the owner to provide evidence the car has been correctly serviced. Non-Toyota garages won't be able to undertake any warranty work.

Great, thanks for that. Don't have much faith in main dealer servicing after hearing bad things about them in general. My guy has been doing my old VW for 17 years and he's really good and trustworthy. Might stick with Toyota servicing if it was a hybrid as it is probably more specialised but Aygo servicing must be pretty straightforward.

As long as its a VAT-registered garage, may be OK.

Emphasis on the word "may"...I've just bought a new Y20 Yaris..and tied in a servicing plan for 3 years with my supplying Toyota local main dealer..who thankfully is good. (though I generally would use a trusted independent who I've used for over 10 years)

IMHO unless you have main dealer servicing history then I think there is risk attached should anything go pear-shaped.

As Mike suggests..there is far more onus on you to prove that servicing has been done to the correct standards should you use an independent...and I don't believe Toyota would look as favourably on any issues.

Ok, maybe I'll stick with Toyota then. My guy is a proper garage. He would use all original parts from the Toyota dealer but probably best not to take the chance of affecting my warranty.

I would go with Toyota garage for at least the warranty period.  After that, well, your choice, if you find the Toyota dealer has been fair with you maybe stick with them. You probably know Toyota have  5+ club, where Toyotas over 5 year old can be subject to a 20% discount on servicing. Plus a good dealer should offer a collection-delivery or a loan car for the service period. And there is some value, I believe, in having a Toyota dealer “stamp” on the service record. All electronic I believe now, but they will still stamp a book if one is presented (at least my dealer does,  it they are a good one).

I've just ordered a new X Play Aygo, don't get sucked into taking their gap insurance. Much cheaper going elsewhere and you don't need it for the first year anyway. I have been doing pcp finance since 2014 and I'm now getting my third Aygo with Toyota. I swap every three years.
