KMH to MPH speedometer

This regards a yaris my aunt has.

She lives in Northern Ireland but was given a yaris last year that came from the republic of ireland. They use KMH down there amongst other subtle trim level differences.

She is looking the speedometer to read in MPH and for the odometer to read in miles.

If you stare into the speedometer it is possible to see the digital display has the characters for MPH and miles.

I do recall asking on the facebook groups around december time about this, there was a suggestion about pressing buttons in. At the time i tried the suggestions to no avail.

I have attached some pictures of the car to show what type of yaris it is.

I’m not sure how to answer your question Kieran, but what I can tell you is that I’m on the other side of the border to you, in beautiful Donegal and I was able to change mine to MPH as that was the measurement I was taught at school (a long time ago). So I don’t know if that’s helpful or not, good cars though.

Hi Kieran, If you press the right hand button until the display reads odo (not trpi A or trip B) then hold down for a second or two until the display reads mph, the other display should convert automatically, hope that helps.

Btw, that's diesel economy from a 3 cylinder petrol! 🙂

Still costs £50 though then whatever mileage correction would be.

I just thought if the existing one has the segments available on the display then perhaps its a software/settings issue rather than change the whole unit, the issue with replacing it then becomes the mileage, is the mileage stored in the cars ECU or the instrument cluster?

Did stantheman1's suggestion above work?

I wondered because the 2000 model Yaris I had many years ago worked they way he describes.

Also, Prius models (which all have digital instruments) sold in the UK can be set to miles or km on UK models, but for some reason models sold in mainland Europe could only display km and km/h.  So it might be that your aunt's Yaris originated from a country that didn't implement the swap capability.

Just out of interest, I tried the above on my 2017 Yaris but it didn't work. However, it did reveal another option (?) in that "e on" came up in the display and if you then pressed it again, it went to "e off" and at the same time the "EV" indicator in the display also went off? (subsequent presses toggled on/off) Anybody know what this is for? (other than simply disabling the "EV" display indicator)

note: the whole system was on and "Ready" with the ICE idle.

I dont know the age of your Yaris, so i could not look it up myself. Have you checked the owners manual? If the options is there, and most probably yes, there should be a guide how to change it. If the car is under 10 yrs of age, you can download the manual from Toyota UK website, otherwise i hope you have a printed copy.

If there is someone in your area with Techstream or other pro grade diagnostics, they could check and if possible convert the display. That is if the OP cannot use the method suggested above. Also useful if the instrument is replaced, as the mileage needs to be corrected!
Steven (stantheman1) suggestion is one that works on other Toyota's like the Prius. As he has said try this - set to ODO not trip A or B. Then hold until the display changes. Give it a try because it free and if it doesn't you have not wasted any money yet.
There are a lot of hidden features in Toyota's, like some diagnostics and feature changes, that don't need specialist equipment. Some work on different models, some don't.
Good luck.
