How essential is the 2nd in line CAT...

Maybe a stupid question, but here goes...

Have a trusty old RAV4 that has sprung a leak in the exhaust middle section, where the 2nd in line CAT is. There is the first line CAT on the manifold. My question is how essential is the 2nd. Able to find the pipes online either with cat or without, and obviously there is a steep premium for the former.  Anyone have any advice?
