My car is stalling in first gear

After a 465 miles round trip, my car has stalled over 8 times in first gear, especially at round about(S) and signals that are uphill or slight incline, it been occurring for a long time and I thought I put in third by mistake and today the wife drove for few hours due to me being tired and it happened to her as well ( She's very good driver) She's the one who said there is something wrong with the car.

The engine also seems to surge or loose power while cruising? losing power up hill and surge while down hill otherwise no problems.
