Replacing fuel filter diesel 1.4 Yaris 3 2013 (paper type).

Tools and brief notes to replace PAPER ELEMENT fuel filter in Yaris 3 - 2013 year.

Drain the filter housing.

Remove brake servo rubber pipe.

Disconnect the front 2 fuel pipes and seal with old oversize bolts into pipes to stop fuel leaks. Undo and take off clamp securing these pipes and tie pipes away to safety.

Tool;- I used a pair of miniature Mole Grips (hand vice ??) only about 5 inches long, to clamp open clips and push off the rubber pipes . Pliers not so good !.

Tool;- to remove bulkhead filter housing and guard, undo the securing bolt (10mm) – I used a long extension (s), say 12 inches on your ratchet spanner – and a small blob of BlueTack to stop bolt falling out of the socket (and use again when replacing bolt).

Juggle the filter housing out from the bulkhead. Unscrew completely the drain plug and mounting.

PUSH if you can (otherwise I used a light tap with a small hammer and 3 inch piece of wood batten – careful here).

Tool;- Big set of Stilson pipe grips – (my great grandads )– near 3ft long with 4 - 5 inch max jaw opening, very heavy, and clamped filter and housing unit in a bench vice. Gently unscrew the filter housing.

Reverse above to refit. The filter housing must go fully into the guard, replace the drain plug assembly, close tap !! - then bolt the filter housing onto bulkhead – now the fun starts….

Push the back two pipes onto the filter housing connectors (not easy), you can see the plastic covers on the clips – they are to protect fingers, so as not to get cut !! (I suspect someone could weld (attach) 2 long (6inch ?) flat metal extensions onto Mole grips to do the job (afterthought!))..

Tools;- Large syringe body (no needle or plunger) and a small funnel, to refill the filter & housing.

Tie up the two loose front pipes vertically, pipe openings must be higher than the fuel filter outlet pipes - stick the syringe nipple in the longer pipe and put the funnel on the syringe and pour fresh, clean diesel slowly until it dribbles out of the lower pipe (1/3 litre ??)

Pipes back onto filter… pump the button on top of the filter housing, just to be sure it’s completely full and no air. Clamp back on. Brake servo pipe back on.
