This is the BMW EGR cooler.  Remove it from the engine and pour some mixture (75% water & 25% caustic soda) inside the metal pipe and block the other end untill full. Keep the solution in there for an hour and refill it with fresh solution for another hour after draining.  It should clean the carbon build up.  Then get it refitted to the car.

This is very similar to the Audi/VW that I clean recently.  Difference is with that you can split it and clean it with a metal boiler flue brush.

Good luck.

The problem with blocking off the EGR on a modern diesel is that it will put the engine management light on constantly. I don't know the situation in Ireland, but in the UK an engine management light illuminated is an instant MOT fail now.

Not necessarily. The 2012 Avensis 2.0 D4D which I now drive was previously used by my wife to drive the 3 miles to work and back every day for 4 years! Never a good idea with any modern diesel, but it seems to have escaped this ordeal without any EGR or DPF issues. Hopefully it won't have any as I now use it for a 60 mile per day motorway commute.

Many thanks yes I am learning at this late stage , never had diesel before. I have been told diesel needs good drive to keep dpf and egr clean .  Contacted 7 garages none returning calls ,

Help help help as you have seen I have been looking for advice on. Egr,  and as you know I had it replaced at a very high price 1040e. Well I now have got another shock , as lights are back on, so back to Toyota to be told it’s cpu, so has to be replaced at cost of 2000e. Car is still under warranty, Toyota says cpu not covered, so much for Toyota reliability and customer care, please please advise,

On what basis are they saying its not covered by the warranty? Water damage or similar?

Not given any explanation other than to say cpu  needs to be replaced. I am in shock as left car in with,Check parking brake system, told it was egr, cost 1040e, same message again, went back to be told cpu problem,

As you're in Ireland the Toyota new car warranty is presumably only 3 years, so is this a Toyota extended warranty? Pretty sure the UK Toyota extended warranty would cover the ECU but Ireland may be different?

Did you buy the car from a Toyota main dealer? Does it have full dealer service history. If so I'd get in touch with Toyota Ireland customer service and see what they say about it.

The new car warranty in Ireland is 3 years/100,000km. If the car has an extended warranty, it may be a third party extended warranty rather than a Toyota extended warranty.

Thank you for replying, I bought car in NI so it has uk 5 year warranty, car bought from dealer not Toyota, it has full Toyota dealer dealership service as car was originally uk car, I contacted Toyota NI .they have never heard of cpu failure. I have had Toyota for 15 years very little problems, this is why I wanted another Toyota, also because of Toyota reliability and customer service,  but I have since learned Toyota purchased a lot of bmw engines and their are a lot of complaints about this engine, being an. OAP in 70s findings all this very stressful, as I can. See where this is heading,

In that case I think you may have to take the car to a Toyota dealer in Northern Ireland to have it repaired under the 5 year warranty. Your issue may be that an ROI Toyota dealer can't claim anything from Toyota under a warranty on a car 4-5 years old originally from the UK, but I honestly don't know how Toyota would deal with that situation.

The Toyota UK new car warranty comprises the standard 3 year/60,000 mile plus a 2 year/40,000 mile extension issued by Toyota GB. As the car has been exported to another country (Ireland) not sure whether the 2 year extension will be supported by Toyota Ireland.

You need to contact Toyota Ireland to ask the question.

Thank you, Toyota Ireland not interested, spoke to customer care and asked for head office but no help,  ok thanks again

As mentioned by Frosty the 4th & 5th year are provided by Toyota GB and can only be claimed on in the UK, the car will have to go to NI for consideration under warranty.

I drove all the way to NI Toyota, to do diagnostic on car to charge me 95e and no it’s not under. Warranty. They told me they never had a cpu issue, can anyone tell me have you heard of a cpu or ecu failure, once again thanks

I would think they mean ECU failure, and no I've never heard of this happening on an Avensis. But why are they saying it's not covered by the warranty? You need to establish exactly why they think it's not covered as normally it would be.

Sorry missed ur message, tryed contacting Toyota NI warranty dept, no one available, so spoke to service dep, they had only one case where connecting a tow bar , wiring was wrong, otherwise no other known case, they suggested it maybe happened when egr was replaced.

Could they not reflash the ecu. I would contact a company called BBA Reman, and chat them about having it tested. Something tells me they are following standard testing protocol, via their workshop software. I would source a good independent workshop around you, maybe even a toyota specialist.

Got a call from lovely woman from Toyota, she  listened to my story. And rang Toyota garage , who In turn rang me , they kept car for 7 hours, I understand they went through 18 sensor points. To check them all .  Lights are all of on dash. But they are not sure if problems solved so suggested I run car for few days, thanks for patience and advice
