Question about T27 Avensis worn steering wheel restoration

I bought 2010 T27 Avensis recently and it´s steering wheels leather is pretty worn. It have only 110 000 km (about 68 350 miles) mileage, and the leather paint/coating is worn-out badly top of the steering wheel. Leather is otherwise in good condition.

Has anyone done any kind restoration to Toyota´s leather steering wheel?

Could this do the magic: https://www.furnitureclinic.co.uk/leather-steering-wheel-repair-kit ?

Does anyone know what should i do?

And does anyone know is it genuine leather (so that furnitureclinics product could probably be suitable) or some leatherette kind material?

My car is a year older, and apart from the stitching coming apart a few years ago, Mine is in good condition. I stitched the wheel myself and it has been okay since.

Since you are non UK, you need to specify your country/region for local assistance. Hopefully someone can advise on leather care.

Stitches is still in good condition. Previous owner maybe had fingers full of rings. Only the top layer (paint or what´s on it) is worn. My local car-care store sell that furnitureclinics kit, so that makes me wonder if it fits to Avensis steering wheel. My steering wheel is just like this: s-l640.jpg

Mine is tye same steering wheel. I don't think it matters what make the car is, it is the material that counts. You need to let a leather specialist see it.

Hi Jin,

My T27 steering wheel was in such a bad condition that I was thinking of purchasing a cover or a new wheel. Instead I bought the exact same kit as the one in your link and restored my wheel completely. It looks as new and I am very happy that I bought the kit. I wish I made before and after pics to show them to you.

Just make sure to clean the steering wheel well and when you think you cleaned enough, clean again! Put light thin layers of dye and let it dry before putting a new layer on it. Just take your time with it. GL

Hi Peter,

Thank You so much for response and the info! I will now definitely try that kit to my steering wheel after reading it was success!

I thought too cleaning must be the key of the whole process.

How long You gave time to dry the wheel before installing it to a car and drove with it without getting painted hands?

You will be surprised how much dirt has collected over the years. Your cloth will be pitch black the first few wipes.

I cleaned the wheel in the evening and dyed the wheel the next morning without taking off the wheel. I just taped off the parts of the wheel and make sure you dont drip on your seats with the paint. 5 hours laterI could already drive the car. The paint still wasnt fully dry, but dry enough to not give me black hands.

The paint will need about a full week to fully cure

  • 1 month later...

So I did fix my steering wheel with Furniture Clinics steering wheel repair kit about two months ago. It was pretty easy to use but the alcohol jar was so little, so I used a little extra amount of isopropanol to clean steering wheel. Now it is like new! I recommend this to everyone who is struggling with this issue.

Thanks for sharing. 👍 Many cars has leather wheels damaged, I think is down to different people alkalinity ph in their sweat and or the hand cream and cosmetics they been using, and how they had cleaned the wheels through their ownership.

I’m new to the forum and one thing annoying me about my new Avensis (new to me) is how wore and shiny the wheel is compared to the Nappa leather pristine one in my Old DS.  Having seen the reviews on here and the process video online I’ve got this on my list.

product seems great. It promises a lot but it seems like it’s worth it.

with the brush, cleaner and steering wheel kit I’m seeing £41 total. 10% off first visit so around £36. Not bad!!! Cheaper than a new wheel or re-doing it with a professional
