T27 2.0D No acceleration in first gear.

I have just bought a 2012 Avensis Estate T27 D4D 2.0 with 225K on the clock. Even with my foot to the floor the car accelerates very lethargically in first gear until at last I can change up to second whereupon full performance returns and the car accelerates well.  This problem only shows up when setting off in first and it does not matter whether the engine is hot or cold.  Yes, I have tried switching off the traction control but this makes no difference.  Any hints appreciated!
