Intermittent Non Starting 2017 Aygo

Good morning all

New Toyota owner (well the other half) and we are having problems.

The car is a 2017 Aygo, and it is not respecting who is boss.

Initially it would not start on the push button, sometimes did, sometimes would not and then would five minutes later. Eventually we gave up and called out the RAC who diagnosed a tired Battery and a new one was duly fitted. Car then behave as it should, but the fault has returned. We noticed the key light was flashing green, thinking it may be the key Battery, both were swapped but no start, then five minutes later it does, despite doing nothing different.

I looked in the handbook again at what flashing green key means and it does not say, only flashing orange. Elsewhere it says flashing green refers to the steering lock and to move the wheel while starting, this made no difference and the steering wheel was not locked anyway.

So in summary, new Battery, new key fob batteries so why doesn't the damn thing start? Any ideas folks?

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yes keyless start.

No pattern to flashing, just on off / on off about every second or so. The key flash starts as soon as I get in the car and continues until it eventually starts, never goes orange, or red and always flashes, never stays on.

Brand new shop bought Duracell 2036 Battery in both fobs

Manual

Got it going this morning after about 5 mins, sounds eager enough to start so not a car Battery again. The RAC checked the alternator output and it was 14.2v IIRC.

The dealer looms I think.....

Cheers

Is it in neutral, Clutch down  (pump the clutch a few times you may have a bad switch) - have you tried putting it acc mode first then a second press to start ? Green flashing is normal tbh a main stealer will be able to run a diagnostics scan, what should be covered under warranty

as above try the fob on the on button to start it or place the fob near the receiver aerial (side of the seat)

Have a read of this..................... (note some functions relate to the MMT (x shift) only

Hi, thanks again reply and for the info

tried the key on the button trick, it registered the key as the key blinked red but no start

tried ACC first then a second attempt but no start

Other half tried it at lunchtime as a check and is simply will not start, tried locking it again and re-entry three times but no use.

The RAC are on their way again as it is stuck at work motionless, and my Alfa Spider is on standby for tomorrow!

The clutch position sensor is a good shout, similar thing with the brake pedal caught out many a garage on early flappy pedal Alfas when it was new technology. Bought to be something simple.

If you have  driver's side mat, is it properly secured as it may move and prevent the clutch pedal being fully depressed?

If the car is cranking when the start button is pressed the clutch and gear position switches are fine, there is a bulletin for hard starting of 1.0 Pre facelift Mk2 Aygo,

EG-00036T-TME Version: 1

Subject: 1KR-FE Engine: Hard to start

Models - Model Codes: Aygo - KGB40; Yaris - KSP90, KSP130

Component & Model features: 1KR-FE

DESCRIPTION OF THE PHENOMENON Some customers may experience and report difficulties to start the engine after parking. Engine may take longer than 3 seconds to start and DTC P1604 will be stored. Many different factors can affect engine start-ability, but the scope of this bulletin is exclusively for cases where root cause is high concentration of carbon deposits.

Example of carbon deposits on piston surface.

image.thumb.png.07cccff6d6d179a7770b181cacf41865.png

Carbon deposits are not abnormal inside combustion chamber, but some of the existing fuel additives in the market can affect deposits concentration in terms of amount and size. Once those deposits flow through the exhaust valves, the biggest ones could remain between the valve and the valve seat creating a gap. This gap causes lack of compression and consequently, difficulties to start the engine.

REPAIR PROCEDURE This bulletin is exclusively applicable for hard to start cases caused by carbon deposits. If that is not the case, please follow the procedure on the repair manual.

REPLACE STARTER AND Battery AS INDICATED BELOW:

1. DISCONNECT AND REMOVE THE Battery.

2. REMOVE THE STARTER AS INDICATED IN THE REPAIR MANUAL.

3. INSTALL THE NEW STARTER AS INDICATED IN THE REPAIR MANUAL.

4. WHEN APPLICABLE, REPLACE Battery TRAY (ONLY FOR YARIS).

5. INSTALL THE BATTERY.

6. IN CASE OF AYGO (ONLY), WIRE CONNECTED TO BATTERY'S POSITIVE TERMINAL MUST BE TURNED AROUND 90 DEGREES TO MAKE ROOM BETWEEN THE WIRE AND THE HEATER HOSE.

7. END OF PROCEDURE.

Additional info for step 6 (battery's positive terminal for Aygo only): The target of this operation is to turn the positive terminal 90 degrees as shown in the next pictures:

HI, thanks for the replies folks, interesting info on the service update, it is a pre-faceft version.

It is down to the clutch pedal not being pushed down far enough. After the original breakdown that needed a new Battery the seat was moved to accommodate the much longer legs of the RAC man who was working on it. It seems like other half did not get it back to its original position but one notch off so the clutch pedal was not always fully depressed, probably depended on how thick the soles of that days shoes were 🤣.

so the good news is that it now starts reliably and I can stop searching for Alfa Mitos on eBay.

Cheers for your input guys👍
