Hybrid flat battery ?

 Went out to car & started,  came inside house,  leaving the fans on ,  clearing icy window ( the engine kicked in).

Went back out, ( 20 minutes later , I'd forgotten)   car not responding to start button . key fob ok ( red light flashes)

I am wondering ,  as I was inside - key fob in pocket, that the engine may not have restarted , but the fans run Battery down , Is this a possibility.

& what to do next.. 

Is it possible to charge up Battery externally ?

Hmm unusual the hybrid Battery should not go flat when I had my auris I could take the key out of the car once started and it would continue to run. Turn the car off completely then try restarting it again it sounds like the 12v Battery has gone flat which can be recharged however you cannot charge the hybrid Battery externally. You should get the hybrid battery checked it’s possible you may have one or two cells breaking down although I would say that as the car is 2014 this seems unlikely.

Thanks Rosgoe, I didn't realise there was a separate 12 v Battery

Was having a look on youtube &  saw you can jump start , which I never knew -  there is a terminal in the fuse box.

I have a charger but can't find it at the moment -  I could also attach to the jump start tag.

If you manage to jump start, leave the car running in ready mode if you can’t drive it for at least 2 hrs, this will help a lot, and do the same thing every week twice by 45 min each time.

If you cant open the door with the key fob, don't forget there is a conventional metal key hidden in the key fob that should open the drivers door enabling you to get to the bonnet release.

Thanks Hugh ,  Can get inside OK but the bonnet release, like petrol cap release lever ,  looks like it activates something electrical so wont open ,

 Of conversant with a Yaris hybrid, but, the petrol cap may have a electric trigger to release it, but I reckon the bonnet does not, it will be mechanical. Without yanking the bonnet release handle, be firm with it.                   
The 12v Battery has a main use of lighting up the cars computer, amongst a few other things.  You don’t have a starter motor, so the Battery does not need to be heavy duty.

Does the Handbook give any clues re opening petrol cap?

I think you will need power for that, but as long as you have fuel in the thing you need is Battery power. Try the bonnet release with firmness but not harshly.

Bonnet release is definitely just a cable. Pull the release until you hear a click then find the latch under the front edge of the bonnet. Not sure about the petrol filler but I always thought that was also a cable. The rear hatch is electric though. 

12v Battery is under the rear seat. The seat cushion can be released by pulling sharply upward.  I believe it can be very difficult to release though and its easier to charge using the special terminal in the fuse box.

Just seen you in Aberdeenshire - probably a bit colder then down here in Cheshire.

The bonnet itself might have been frozen to the bonnet seal, once lever pulled you can try squeezing fingers and pull up a bit, if this is the case silicone spray on cloth and go around all door, bonnet and boot seals, I done it before beginning of winter and have no problems now. Some people use Vaseline too, anything that is good for the rubber.

That's a very clever plan , I have some silicone spray.

In my experience, the best thing is to lightly spray the silicone polish onto a cloth and gentlty wipe that over the rubbers. You don't know what adverse effects chemicls may have!

I lifted up the rear seat on ours and took some photos for reference.

Stand in the middle of the car and grip the front of the rear seat, and give it a HARD tug.  It's located in hard nylon slots.

Photos attached.  You can see the 12v Battery.

The sun melted ice sticking the bonnet , it opened as I had released catch yesterday after all.

Charged it  &  then started OK.

Was only 4.4V  , possibly on its way out.

I fancy getting one of these boosters which may come in useful if the Battery fails again,  somewhere remote.

That's great thanks Mick ,  I intend to inspect Battery. this car has had damp problems in the past . I'd like to see if all looks OK.

I see the 2 nylon sockets on the metal frame on photo, I guess the seat lifts vertical .

I got a unit off Amazon, a Suaoki, there are various models, probably about £45 now (no need to pay anymore), dont need much power to connect across Battery and fire up the cars computer.  Did it once on the wifes Auris Hybrid with Battery in the boot. I connected the Suaoki, and by the time I got to the driving seat and pressed the button that was enough, lit up the dash, wonderful.

If yo keep the unit in the car, obvious place, make sure you can reach it from the drivers door. If car Battery goes you can unlock the driver door with a key, but if you store the unit in the boot there is only one way to get at it - and its not by lifting the boot up, it wont. Its a scrabble over the front seats then a scrabble into the boot.

If any moisture in the car I can recommend getting some of these and place in the rear doors pockets, I did and they collected damp very well indeed.

and also some of these damp collection bags placed next to the hybrid Battery in case any moisture locks in near. Hybrid Battery does usually fail from moisture damage.
