Timing chain

Silly question, I’ve read my Haynes manual front to back and I can’t find any indication of when you change the timing chain on a Toyota Yaris vvti 1.3 2007 if there is meant to be any slack? I don’t mean loads as in about 0.5cm - 1cm when everything is TDC?

ive hand cranked it 5-6 times full rotations and everything come up tdc. I’m just worried about putting all back together and still get the loose timing chain code p0016.

many thanks

They should last the cars life, they can go bad so do the tensioners but if they do you will notice by either hearing it or by error code coming up.

Sorry I don’t think I was clear with my explaination, I’ve changed my timing chain as I had the p0016 code, got it checked out, and was advised the timing chain was stretched.

So I’ve changed the timing chain, tensioner etc. But now it’s all back together, there seems to be a bit of slack at the top of the chain in between the twin cams. So I was wondering if a slight slack was normal or not.

many thanks

What state were the sprocket teeth in?

There was nothing noticeable, but I’ll have a look again and take a photo of what it’s like.

thanks again

Sorry I took a while, here’s a couple of pictures and a small video.

as you can see there a bit of slack but if I move the cam a touch back it tightens right up, almost like it needs one more click on the tensioner.

any ideas as I’m just at a blank.

thanks

Do all the timing marks line up ? did you lock the cams with a tool ? Has the tensioner moved out fully after releasing the pin ?

Edit, where the old guides worn ?

Is it the 2sz-fe engine ?

Did you do just the chain and tensioner or did you do a full kit ?

All marks line up,

tensioner appears fully out,

tensioner and chain are new.

didn’t use a locking tool as the Haynes guide says to put the two cams at 20 degrees off and snap back.

Not sure about worn marks everything seemed all ok, as in no obvious wear.

engine is the 2007, 1.3ltr, VVT-I sorry don’t know about the 2sz-fe bit.

Worn sprockets, worn guides and/or worn vvti gear

tbh i would take the chain off and verify the timing, ideally a full kit would have been a better option

I'm not familiar with that type of chain and sprocket, what on earth is it?

Just checked, all guides are new as well but I didn’t get the sprockets in the kit I bought. So looks like I will have to re buy the full kit.

thanks for your help.

It's a silent chain a combination of a toothed and roller sleeved chain

Rewatching the vid it's the vvti pulley is either worn or out by 1 tooth

Sorry to be a pain I’m not sure which is which. As I’m good at putting things together just not what they are.
so is it the main big bit that’s the vvti pulley or the one next to it?

As I thought it was one tooth out but I was there for about 3 hours trying to move one tooth. So I’m pretty confident it’s not a tooth out.

Thank you flash, it does seem to be the vvti as I’m assuming it sits tight on the little nob that sticks out. As in no movement.

The vvti output (silver part) can adjust the cam shaft at higher rpm using oil pressure as the input gear (gold part) stays in time with the chain

the pin (nub) in the end of the cam locates the gear/pulley to the shaft
