ive a standard avensis on an 04 plate. the problem where i live is the roads are really bad, in the last 12 months i had 3 punctures, two of which had carcase wires exposed and 2 buckled wheels from the potholes .

i know this might sound crazy but could i get away with fitting a higher profile all terrain tyre? i know it will raise the gearing but i dont tow anything and i am the only person in the car

Yes it’s possible with new wheels. What is your engine size, and wheel size currently? You can do with new wheels and tyre sizes and perhaps buy all season tyres like Goodyear vector, XL variant. Here site to look for your wheels.

its a 1.6 and the tyre size is 205 x 55 x 16, wondering if i can put a 215 x 65 x 16 on the same rim?

Don’t do that, it will be a big mistake. The whole car dynamics will change, may become horrible thing to drive plus unsafe in emergency situations, plus engine is too small for bigger tyres. And last but not least it is against your insurance policy, it’s counted as modification. What tyres are fitted now so you get a lots of trouble? Under inflated tyres are also prone to puncture and tyre walls damage. As I recommended before, stick with your tyre size but buy all season XL tyres. Like this one for example, https://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/rshop.pldsco=110&cart_id=y7idxQ70YO11S4Ly.110.422432320&sowigan=GAN&Breite=205&Quer=55&Felge=16&kategorie=6&ranzahl=4&rsmFahrzeugart=ALL&search_tool=standard&Label=C-B-72-2&details=Ordern&typ=R-367950

or any of your choice but make sure they are XL and properly inflated when cold. 👍

Hi, XL are best suited for your needs and here is why:

“An XL tyre lasts longer than a standard tyre when driving in similar conditions. These tyres have a reinforced design and offer protection against internal and external damage. The rigidity of the tire ensures better road grip and cornering ability. The likelihood of accidental curb damage is significantly reduced.”
