Toyota Auris 2.2 D-CAT DPF problems

Its been more than a month now that my DPF its constantly regenerating when my car is up to temperature. It has a lot of city driving short miles. We took it for a quick aggressive driven road trip so it can regenerate properly but I think we didn't do it right as we were driving it hard with constant fluctuation in revs(It worked for a week). My mechanic quoted me 300euros to properly take out and clean the DPF with chemicals. It also constantly emits an awful toxic smell. I am planning to take it again for a road trip as soon as the lockdown stops here but what is the best method to do a regeneration and what i should do differently this time.

Hey Mario,

Have a look at Terraclean (https://www.terraclean.co.uk/) I'm unsure on prices, however I'm, pretty sure they're cheaper than £300, and well reviewed too! I know of a few posts on these forums that talk about them.

Just a quick side question, when your SR180/T180 is doing these DPF cleans, do you notice the engine RPM fluttering slightly? By around 100RPM? Causing a slight judder in the car?

Thank you, and I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for answering but unfortunately I don't live in the UK. RPM fluttering by ~100RPM maybe yes but judder no also its been since I stopped going out of town and only do short trips around town. It feels like its trying to regenerate but it cant due to low RPM and constantly moving and stopping.

Ahh okay!

Are there no companies which specialise in DPF cleaning?

From what I have read, typically from other car brands, the DPF may actually be clogged wish ash, rather than needing to regenerate. Have you tried products like Redex DPF cleaner, or Wynns? It may be too late for it to be useful, however it could be worth a go, especially in combination with a long drive.

Are the DPF filters a legal requirement in your country? I know in the UK there are companies which offer "DPF solutions", but if your country does not require them, then I would personally get rid! I've spoken to people who have done this, and their MPG increases significantly, as well as restoring a little power.

I hope this helps!

Unfortunately my country requires the DPF in order to pass inspection. I did try one of those additives and it did the job for about a week but nothing more. I'm planning on taking it a long aggressive ride but with this stupid lockdown in here I cant leave the city which it makes it worse. Its really strange to be honest because I don't feel lack of power so its not fully blocked yet but consumption is higher than average(10.4 L/100KM) so maybe its still somewhat salvageable.

I used to run my Rav4 T180 2.2 D cat on premium diesel from Shell can’t remember if they called it V power without problems although it is expensive mostly short journeys. And I used to use diesel fuel system cleaner additive.

Hello,

Just switched to Shell v-power for my last 2 times, I've heard its the best despite the expensive price.

May I ask if there's a limit to diesel fuel additives or you can just put a certain amount per tank.

You can carry on using additives without problems I think I did anyway cleans the fuel injectors as well half a bottle to a tank full from memory (small bottle) not sure that you can keep using dpf cleaner though as I never had a problem with the dpf.

Don't quote me on this, but I don't believe you can continuously use DPF cleaner fuel additive. However you can keep using system cleaner from Wynns or Redex.

Wow, 10.4 is really low, even for a 180 in my experience! I wish I could help more!

I know personally I chose to not use V Power, simply due to the cost here, I didn't see it as worth it. However, it's rather accepted that it is better, so hopefully that maintains it a little better for you!

Hello, thanks for the response

Diesel is pretty expensive here and there's not much difference from the standard one as far as pricing. From the time I started using Shells vpower diesel I've seen a lot of improvement as far as fuel economy

Excuse me for the stupid question but do system cleaners as you mentioned above work or are they "waste of money".

Also I am trying to make an appointment with my mechanic to see if he can do a manual regen or something(better than nothing) and if he finds something I will give more details

Thanks in advance,

Thanks in advance,

From my experience, they do seem to work.

When I purchased my SR180, it was clogged up to hell! It didn't perform well at all, so much so I think my 2003 1.3 Yaris would've out-run it to 100. It was bad!

I have somewhat regularly used Redex system cleaner, I only tend to buy it when it is on sale, normally for around £2 a bottle (Which does two tanks of fuel).

Most of my driving is long-ish drives, on average 20 miles per drive, and they do appear to have atleast maintained some engine cleanliness, and kept my EGR valve a little cleaner. However this could easily be down to the  longer drives I do tend to do, there's no way I can know.

Personally, I'd give them a go, have a look at the different brands and see how much they cost in different places. I'd personally recommend just for general engine maintenance to use them all once, separately, and see if any of them make a difference.

It very easily could all be a placebo, but I don't really mind spending £102 a month on fuel, rather than £100.

Also, as far as my Rookie-non-mechanic knowledge goes. You can buy bottles of Cetane booster, as well as bottles of system cleaner. From what I can tell, those two products together essentially make the difference between Diesel, and V-Power/ BP Ultimate. (Someone please correct me if I am wrong!) - So there is a very good chance, that depending on the price difference in fuels, you could save money by buying those two fuel additives and adding it to a regular tank, rather than purchasing premium diesel.

Hope this helps!

You are gonna find this strange but regular diesel fuel is like 1.159euros per liter and premium 1.198. Fuel additives and similar things are more like 5-6 euros per bottle here . But I am willing to pay that price if for no problems or at least not so frequent problems.

If you don't mind asking what do you did to unblock your dpf and egr at first before started using additives.

Well I'm rather jealous!

DPF I have done nothing about, simply driving. Hopefully by the end of this month I'll be able to go on a 40mile round trip on the motorway in 4th gear, to see if my DPF needs a forced regen.

My EGR, I removed it from the car, gentle went at it with a screwdriver to remove the large amounts, and some carburettor/ EGR cleaner and an old toothbrush.

My intake manifold was also clogged, I still haven't done much about that, although I did get a strong shop vac type hoover to allow me to clean the EGR/intake manifold mount so it wouldn't fall into the engine.

This helped a lot, I then went for long aggressive drives with fuel additive, and the issue doesn't seem to have come back.

Although funnily enough, I always had a dip in power as you set off from a standstill, like a lag between setting off and the turbo waking up, after my MOT last month this has completely gone. I assume the emissions test must have cleared something.

I hope this helps

Went to my mechanic this morning, ecu has 0 codes showing and he is positive that its the oil because of the years and mileage of the engine and on monday we are changing it from 5w30 to 10w30 to see if that solves it. I will update as soon as possible.

Fuel additives works great and I highly recommend them instead of more expensive fuel., which in many cases is not better than standard one, u don’t know what additives are in and how much plus been more expensive usually people do not buy often and so you may end up filling your tank with a lot of junk ., I know from personal experience not a good one. Buy standard fuel from reputable garage add fuel system cleaner and drive as usual, no need hard acceleration or high rpm all it needs is longer drive, 1 hr for example at 100km/h doing so will rise the temp of the engine and will burn off the soot and happy days. I am a motorway driver and all my cars engines been clean as new even after many miles. , diesels especially likes long motorway journeys, driving in town is killing for the engine unless you are a taxi and been busy driving for hours each time. 👍

Hey,

Soo, couple days passed since Friday which I changed my oil to thicker E9 oil.

Firstly it seemed better smoke was a lot less and not as thick.

Today, Monday it smoked a lot but still not as thick as it was and shorter duration. My mechanic think its the turbo that's failing, not the turbo itself but the seals and its leaking into the intake.

He is going to diagnose it more and if its that the case then he will find the prices of both repairing and replacing the whole turbo and see what's better.

I really want this to end because its so frustrating but at the same time I'm very busy with university and cant really cooperate. Also scared for the prices.

Gonna upload again if I have any updates.
