Yaris Auto Light Switch malfunctions

I love my Toyota Yaris but suddenly the Auto component for headlights on the steering column seems to be malfunctioning. 
Instead I can hear it switching on when it’s daylight & bright instead of when in a dark area eg car park or nights.

any ideas where the fault would be or do I need to take it to an Auto Electrician?

Make sure the windscreen is clean, see if there are any codes stored
