MOT time

Hi folks hope everyone is well?

The time has come for MOT, not expecting anything major but want get the oil changed too. Car is 08 reg 1.6 petrol covered 60k, what's the best oil to use ?

Hi, best oil for any car is the new oil😊, for you perhaps is 5w30 but check owners manual and what make of oil is down to personal preferences or depending what garage will fill in if they change it for you. Shell, Castrol, Mobil, Millers, Petronas, Toyota oil all good names. You can check oils here too. https://www.opieoils.co.uk

The 'preferred' oil grade is 0w-20. I suspect that a lot of cars are using 5w-30 because it is readily available and cheaper.

What a coincidence. I was only just looking at the owners manual for the Auris, so here is confirmation - 

I always my Avensis Valvematic oil changes myself and always use 0w-20 Petronas 7000 fully synthetic. I have the oil filter tool to change the cartridge type filter.

Have you noticed this Petronas 0w20 start disappear from online vendors, only one I think from eBay still sells at £28 for 5ltr. I may get another one soon to make sure I have for next change as I got the oil filter ready . Maybe will try millers, comma or motul next time., or perhaps just stick with Toyota oem.👍

This is not what you were asking, but anyhow...

Your car may starting to suffer some corrosion on its brake pipes, judging by it's age, particularly where they go behind the petrol tank on the way to the back wheels.

You don't want to be highlighting this to the tester unnecessarily, but on the other hand it would be useful to get their advice as to the condition of these, to prevent a more complicated repair later on! 

Or to get the person who is replacing your oil to clean up and repaint these pipes with some suitable paint.

Yes. I did secure a couple of 5 litre bottles, last year at a very good price. Add that I had plenty left over from previous oil changes, I have enough for now. I will look at other options when the time comes. Engine hardly needs topping between changes, and done just over 95,000 miles ('58 plate 2009).

Thanks for all the replies in the 2 years I've owned it it's the only car I've had that's just run and run without any niggles, I'll source the Toyota oil off fleabay I reckon think it's about 45 quid

Ok, remember Toyota genuine parts from eBay are only real , genuine if you buy from a well known seller with some rare exceptions , dealer that sells there too. Toyota official store or other main dealers that sells and service cars , otherwise the risk you getting fake one is very high. 👍

I recently paid £37 (delivered) for 5 litre of Toyota 0W20 from a dealer, on the bay. Manufacturing date on the container, late 2020 with a 5 years unopened shelf life.

Other parts, from the bay, always from a dealer or even Toyota's official store there (as Lee suggests). Parts-King too, who can be very competive re prices.
