08 2.0 d4d cutting out

Hi everyone,

I have a 2008 2.0 d4d. Been a great car but having problems now.

My missus uses it for work. Shes telling me that its cutting out randomly.

She says it happens when she comes to stop or about to stop.

It fires back up straight away but it's obviously very annoying.

When we got the car it had problems starting and running rough so injectors were replaced by a garage (2nd hand injectors I'd assume)

Any ideas? I'm thinking could be egr valve?

That's unfortunate,  overall these 2.0 1AD engines are extremely reliable.

EGR blockage would normally result in reduced performance, higher fuel consumption and possibly a MIL with the ECU maybe falling back to default settings (severely reduced performance). Mine has blocked a number of times over the years but never resulted in cutting out. However my EGR valve itself has always remained healthy and if yours failed there may be different symptoms, would expect a MIL in that case though. I find it's always worth cleaning out the EGR, they run so much better afterwards.

More likely I would say are either fuel filter blocked because it hasn't been changed at the recommended interval, or dirty fuel somehow got into the system, or possibly pump issue, or even lift pump issue (rear of the car in the tank) though these are rarely at fault unless there's a wiring issue. First thing I would check is the common rail pressure using Techstream or equivalent. If you have a rail pressure issue, particularly after raising and lowering the speed of the engine, then suspect one of the valves on the common rail pump, and at this point I would be taking it to a diesel specialist with appropriate test equipment. You could also check whether there are any stored codes while you're there that might give clues to what's going on.  I would also check all pipes from the air filter through the intercooler and turbo are sealing well and there are no leaks (hissing).

Got to have a look at the car today.

Took the egr out while I was at it and cleaned it. Was a bit dirty. Have it looking like new now.

Fuel filter was changed 10k miles ago.

Looked around for any leaks and there is none.

I checked the fuel pressure using the torque and an obd and the pressure seemed fine to me (as in increased with when I reved the car).

I get diesel at the same reputable garage so I don't think it's a dirty diesel issue.

I noticed a bit of residue on this injector,not sure if it's diesel or oil.

I assumed it could only leak diesel when the common rail connects to the injector?

Has anyone seen diesel leak on top here before?

Altho from the quick drive after the egr valve clean it's alot more responsive.
