Help on Avensis Motorsport

Hi all,

I have owned my 2009 Avensis motorsport edition for a few years now. I have recently spent a bit of money on it and this has led me to finding about more about this edition. I was looking at making some modifications and went to look for the Haynes manual only to find they do not have one for this model. The engine is the 2.2 D-cat with 177 bhp, and the car itself is the t-spirit saloon with the motorsport Badge. I have researched the internet for this model and age and just can not find any information on this model at all. There is some information from 2011 onwards for the motorsport badges as that is when Toyota started to enter them in races, but nothing for this year which baffles me. It leads me to think how many was actually made in 2009, and how many exist still? Furthermore, due to the lack of any information for the motorsport Badge in 2009, could my car be a one off? If anybody out there can shed some light on this, and have any information on this as I am more intrigued now than ever due to the lack of info out there on this model. Any information would be really welcome! Many thanks in advance. Dean

Don't think Toyota produced the Motorsport as a limited edition. They sold the Motorsport bodykit, etc, and it was down to the purchaser to get the parts fitted, painted and so on.

Moved to the Avensis club.

Thank you Frostyballs for your response. I never thought of it from that point a view. It's possible what you say might be the case. However, it does state on the V5 motorsport edition. Even the Badge states limited edition. The grille on the car is different too as well as the shape of the front end/bonnet appears to be smaller and more sleek which suggest different. I found on the history of avensis on the Toyota website they introduced the motorsport editions from 2011 but nothing to explain a model in 2009. It also does not explain the bigger 2.2 d-cat engine in this saloon model with the additional bhp, which unless I am wrong but believe it was only released on the Tourer models? Like I say I am baffled and would love to know the truth. Thank you again as you have given me something to research further into.

The dealer who supplied the car when new would have first registered the car online, and if they registered the car as an Avensis Motorsport, that would have been carried forward onto the V5C.

Thanks again Frostyballs, I have contacted the registered dealer that registered the vehicle but seems they do not know either. 😂

Hi Sam, I will take some photos over the weekend and post them. Ironically enough I came across one of your posts way back in 2012 asking about the motorsport body kit if you recall making that post?

Hi, wow, small world indeed, I do recall that post lol, my other half has a saloon with the full kit, as in front grill and skirts etc, I know the engine has a motorsport electronic unit attached to increase bhp, it does fly, I love driving it when he let's me, which is only if I've suffered a brakedown!! I'm unaware of a specific motorsport model so its interesting

Sam, I have just posted some pictures. I am curious if your other halfs body kit is the same as mine? Also what engine is in his saloon, and what's the increased BHP gone up to? I may well make the same modification myself. I know mine is all done from new and it had to be like this from registration as it states the vehicle is a motorsport. The question is did the original purchaser had these put on ordered to be built in factory like this, or is it a specific model. If so how many were made? I cannot see a model for the saloon with the cat d 2.2 180bhp engine. I believe that only came in the tourer. Unless I am wrong. Also I think the back window in my car is not the usual standard fit for the saloon either. It comes with a fixed parcel shelf too which I believe is not standard either.

Hi Dean,

Apologies for the delay, been really busy.

Love the pics. It looks exactly the same as my other halfs only his is silver and its a 2L diesel. The motorsport bodykit is exactly the same. We've only ever seen 1 other t27 with a kit and that was in London if I recall. They are very rare to see on the road with the kit, saying that we hardly see t27's in general if im honest.

Re the bhp im not sure, I think its 148 standard and with the chip it increases it but im unsure by how much, but I know it makes a massive difference because when you floor it in 2nd and upwards it absolutely flies!

Re the kit it states on the history that the 1st keeper had it fitted at the dealership the next day after purchase.

I doubt that ots a specific model Dean. I think it comes down to whether the first owner requested the motorsport pack. I've seen some online with the full kit and not the front grill. Or the full kit without the rear boot spoiler.

Re the rear parcel shelf, that's standard on all the saloon t27s whereby its fixed. It has to be if you think about it because its a saloon, when you open the boot its all underneath and inside the boot going all the way back.

Hope that helps Dean

P.s

The 2.2 gets the bigger engine and in my opinion the better looking alloys wheels, other than that I dont think that there are any other differences, I'm sure that the suspension set ups are the same.

Btw, has yours got the satnav screen built in? I think that was optional too.

Hi Sam,

thank you so much for your response! It really has been helpful in my quest for answers on this.

I have been mithering the dealer who first registered the vehicle if they can look into it further for me. As yet they have not come back to me, but i know what Toyota salesman are like because I use to be one haha. So they will not waste time on answering questions about a car sold many years ago. I am hoping if i mither some more they will give in and find the information haha!

I am really interested to know what chip was installed on your partners Avensis. I have looked into them with racechip.com. Its not re-mapping but just a fitted chip which can be easily removed at any point. Is that similar to yours? My car will go from 180 bhp to around 225 bhp with the chip installed. At present from the information I have found my 2.2 engine will do 0-60 mph in 8.5 secs according to the data i have researched. So with the chip I am curious to see what changes it would do to the accelleration time. (After reading that back I think im turning into a boy racer! Lol in my late 30s) 😬

As for my car Sam, and what you have said the dealer fitted the kit afterwards on your partners. It makes me think that was not the case for mine. The reason being is that firstly the 2.2 engine, which from my research did not come in the saloon, only the tourer but the suspension does have a motorsport suspension on it. I know this because last year i had it all replaced as it had seized. It cost a !Removed! fortune! So with that information it leads me to believe this is a factory order and must have been built to this specification. I really need to do more research on what additional extras it has. Especially underneath! Mine has the start button and keyless entry, but i am sure this is standard anyway on the t-spirit. Only thing it does not have is the sat nav!! 🤬 So that answers your question. Personally I am not too bothered but I have flirted with the idea of upgrading it but not sure if too or not, as it will lose its originality. Especially when the sat nav is not the best and the cost of the updates etc.

I am now leaning towards my car must be a factory order built with this specification as I completely forgot about the suspension till you mentioned it was the same. I looked at the invoice and it states Motorsport suspension. I called the dealer yesterday and they confirmed it is a specialist suspension on factory order. At the time I didn’t think twice, they just said it needs a new suspension and told them to order it and never give it a second thought!

It really has been enlightening to know how rare these cars must be with the kit on though Sam, and without your info on your partners etc I would still be in the dark so thank you for your input and I shall look forward to hearing back from you on the chip.

P.s sorry Sam I deleted a paragraph where it stated I had my suspension replaced last year with a identical motorsport suspension.
