My small white iQ is furious at Toyota's refusal to repaint my roof

When my iQ was 8 paint flaked of the bonnet. I assumed it was caused by a stone or chip and took it to the Toyota dealership and they gave me a written quote - which I fortunately kept, even though I had the work done elsewhere as the Toyota quote was too high.

A month ago (Feb 2021) large swathes of paint peeled off the roof, but by this time I had heard about the problems with the pearlescent white paint.

Toyota Customer Services told me that they were only extending their goodwill to cars less than 10 years old, so last week I wrote to the Augustin Martin, the CEO of Toyota and received an email today from a Specialist Case Manager denying responsibility, especially since they could find no record of me reporting the 2018 incident. Lucky I kept the quote eh!

No dice, so I have appealed for help from them and will keep you posted.

Just wanted to let others know that there is another sad, but beloved iQ out there with peeling paint.

I bought a 2011 plate a week or so ago that looked almost immaculate... last weekend i washed it (prior to it going into a garage for a roof respray for a by choice colour change) and managed to strip 2 great chunks of paint off the roof 🤦‍♀️

I would have been totally devastated had it not been going in anyway but I'm now rather worried that another panel will start to peel 😞 when we were looking to buy one we saw several with paint missing from the roof or bonnets... such a shame as the white are so lovely)

Good luck with your case and I hope you get sorted 🙂

Be nice to think you might get some assistance from Toyota even given the age of your car...after all, it's a known problem...but I wouldn't hold yer breath.

My Estima (2003) is also white pearl (same colour I assume) and thus far it's been fine and in remarkble shape tbh..and that's after 18 years.!!

If you got a quote from a Toyota dealer back in 2018 and didn't take them up on the quote, why would Toyota GB or the dealer have a copy 2 years later?

Bear in mind that the car is well outside the paintwork warranty (3 years) and any help that Toyota may offer would be a goodwill contribution - a contribution may not be the full cost. Also with recent claims Toyota have asked that the vehicle has a Toyota service history.

See the most recent topic on the same issue:

Oh - lucky you! I'm totally in love my my iQ - much like my granddaughter who is very much in love with her horse - but that's another story 😉

The paint warranty on Toyotas is three years. A 2009 car is 12 years old.

In the past Toyota have agreed goodwill contributions on numbers of IQs with white pearlescent paint where paintwork is peeling. However, as far as I'm aware, their recent stance is they will only consider goodwill contributions where the car has a full Toyota service history. [...]

I was told by the Toyota guy that they extended the goodwill to cars under 10 years old. My first problem appeared in 2018 but I didn't know then that peeling paint was 'a thing' so had it repainted locally, but I did get a quote from the Toyota dealership AND I have a full service history!

They are not putting their hands up, not yet anyway, but I can't afford that kind of work 😞

Mine has, but it's outside the 10 goodwill period, even though the problem started in 2018 when I didn't know about the common problem 😞

From what i can tell there was an issue with the primer bonding to the coated metal, off the top of my head you're looking at £200-300 to have it painted, find a local painter/body shop and get a quote or 3

Not to sound rude but take a male friend with you, as the SOME of car industry is still stuck in the misogynistic dark ages

He said they didn't have a record of me reporting it but I keep everything so was able to send it to them!

That is Toyota USA though.

I appreciate that... I wondered if UK customers were getting a worse deal as (unfortunately) often seems to be the case in matters such as this?

It is all ammunition to push a case forward though.

That's what my local body-shop said about the primer.

You are sweet - but at 72 I can still hold my own and I do have other means 🙂

In the US the issue affects a number of models, but the arrangement excludes the Prius, much to the annoyance of US Prius owners who have had the same issue.

Have you ever seen any other colours peeling? I really wanted the white because I want to be visible - not in a showy-off sort of way, but so people can us coming!

Thanks for the good luck - it's been in short supply recently 😞

In Honest John his morning;

Hue and cry
I have a 10-year-old Toyota iQ and its pearl while paint is peeling from the bonnet. My Toyota dealer said it was a known issue and Toyota was paying for rectification on cars up to 10 years old, but not for older models. I accept that Toyota can’t go on fixing the cars forever, but how was I to know it had a recall in place? RB

It is a common problem. It is very fair of Toyota to take responsibility for cars up to 10 years old – and unfair for owners to expect more than that. The maximum legal liability of seller and manufacturer ended after six years. Paint is not normally warranted beyond three years.

My iQ started to show this problem when it was only 8 (registered Sep 2010) but I didn't know it was common at that time so when Toyota quoted a higher price for my bonnet I went with a local body shop.

Now, 10yrs and 6 months old, 75% of the roof paint has peeled within a month and is showing no signs of stopping. I'm gutted 😞

It wasn't a recall.

It was a goodwill extension, and yes there has to be a cut off point in terms of a time limit. I do realise it looks awful, but on the basis it was not a recall, I don't hold out a lot of hope, but good luck

I get that there has to be a cut-off time, but couldn't they at least give us a discount, or do it at cost?

Have any IQ owners with this issue remedied this with white vinyl on the roof and bonnet? Are other panels on the car affected?

I was thinking about having a pink roof if the white pain is so defective, but it might have been the primer that caused the problem. My local body shop commented on how smooth it was and unlikely to provide enough of a key for the top costs to adhere to.

I had a problem with paint peeling from the bonnet.

Nothing to do with the paint on my iQ but I just got back from B&Q with a large planter, two water butts, a 50L bag of compost and a bag of gravel. I'm very good at packing in tight spaces!

I feel that had you bought it new from a Toyota Dealer and had a full Service History from Toyota, then the problem might have been identified sooner leading to some Goodwill Contribution from Toyota.   Honest John`s response is fair I believe.

Still we are where we are and our options appear to be;

1. Do nothing

2. Have the roof repainted in a colour of your choice, or

3. Have the roof covered in a Plastic Film ( WRAPPED ) in a colour of your choice. See link for what can be achieved. https://www.shorewraps.com/

You may have a Wrapping Company near to you Samantha ?

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you well.

I've no idea what the legalities are on anything like this, all I would say is that this is such a serious and also uncommon (generally within the motor trade) issue that perhaps there would be some form of legal redress if it was pursued. It is just so obviously a major manufacturing defect (and widely acknowledged to be so) that it might be worth getting professional independent legal advice.
