Corolla 2019 Hybrid System Fault - Steering Power Low

Hi guys, hoping someone can help here. Car is a 2019 Corolla 2.0 Hybrid and is displaying a fault stating that the Hybrid System Stopped - Steering Power Low. The car has been parked up for a few weeks and was fine before this. I have trickle charged the 12v Battery but that has made no difference. The car is not under warranty due to a previous collision. Any help appreciated please

Thanks

Presumably if the car is no longer under warranty due to a collision, it was an insurance write off.

Yes it was bought from salvage but it was running okay before it was parked up a few weeks ago

If the car has been unused for weeks, it could be the at the 12v Battery is shot. Can the car be put into ready mode?

It will go into ready and start the engine only for a few seconds when until hybrid system shutdown message appears. I'm thinking maybe the hybrid Battery charge itself is very low?

Think you need to see whether there are any fault codes, and then go from there.

Will need to get it transported to a garage, does anyone know how to put it into maintenance mode to try and charge the hybrid Battery

Maintenance mode does not charge hybrid Battery at all. Your best option is to take the car to Toyota dealer as they have equipment to check and charge your hybrid Battery. Don’t know how much will cost though but it’s the only option. You can call your nearest dealer to discuss 👍

How long did you charge the Battery for ? if the Battery is very low it can take days to charge

is the Battery of a standard type (under the bonnet) or is it an AGM (in the boot) in the Corolla ?

The car has been sat in a salvage yard then sat for a few weeks again its likely just killed the 12V battery, you can make the engine start by setting the heater to either full hot or full cold and turning the lights on (manual)

Thanks for the replies, its the agm type which is in the boot. I charged it overnight until the charger stated it was full. Shows 12.5v with ignition off. It was reading 10.9 volts when I started to charge it

If the hybrid Battery is completely drained for some reason then won’t be able to start and keep in ready mode. There was a similar post with a Yaris hybrid been in a salvage place for a long time. 12v only needed to start the car then the 200v takes over, if it’s too low the system may shuts down to prevent further discharge and possible damage. Can you see what is the hybrid  battery charge on the dashboard when trying to start it?

The hybrid Battery is showing 1 bar of charge. It does start and go into ready mode albeit for 3 or 4 seconds before shutting everything down

In this case very likely the hybrid Battery is discharged below safe threshold and the inverter is not able to charge it since electric power is required from the Battery to create magnetic field in MG1 to regenerate electricity and recharge the Battery. Toyota can manually charge the hybrid battery so the car will be able to start and remain in ready mode. This is also happens when you run out of petrol and keep driving the car in ev mode until battery finish too. 👍

  • 4 weeks later...

Just an update as managed to resolve the issue. There was a crack in the inlet manifold as well as the 12v being shot. New manifold and Battery and all is great now. Thanks to all for your help 🙂
