my 05 Avensis d4d tspirit runs fine when cold but as soon as it gets warm will not accelerate below about 3000 rpm once it gets above this it runs as normal, whilst its struggling to accelerate it does produce some smoke but not large amounts  and once it picks up does not smoke any idea's? have changed fuel filter and air filter no engine lights on

Classic case of a dirty or faulty EGR valve. First step is to clean it, solves 99% of the issues.

as above, could be not totally shut due to carbon build up thus boost pressure escaping until revs/pressure overcome the boost leak rate..

any other boost leak is also possible wether it from a pipe or intercooler

warm air is less dense than cold air maybey explaining how its better when cold...

also could also be scv performing better when cold / cold fuel

or -duff injector leaking when warmed up

or turbo bad

is it black smoke / overfuelling ?
