AC Ineffective - Which gas does the 2013 model take?

Hi all,

I have a 2013, non hybrid Auris (1.6 Petrol, Automatic) - Bought from a Toyota dealer last November.

Now the weather is picking up a bit - I have noticed the Air conditioning is almost totally ineffective, and is unable to keep the car cool. Putting it onto "Auto" mode, results in all the fans up to full blast forever...!

I am looking at Regas, it was supposedly exclusively serviced/repaired (even things as simple as bulbs/wipers) at Toyota by the previous owner - and on the online MyToyota log I cannot see it has ever had anything done to the AC system.

My question is - What gas does this car take? None of the online insert your reg things work, they all bounce back with "unclear, but probably the old one". Most other forum/online posts seem to be about the Hybrid version of the car - which mine is not, and as I understand Hybrids have a slightly different setup than the conventional engine variants? I have seen from other posts that it should be on a sticker/plate somewhere in the engine bay, but I couldn't see anything - might just be me being blind though!

There is an option to regas the aircon I can book online through MyToyota, however this is £139 - I don't know if this is because it uses the newer gas, or that's just the main dealer "Tax". Many smaller garages, and even the big ones like Kwik Fit & Halfords state they cannot regas cars with the 1234yf gas - or only can at specific locations (none of which are anywhere near me!)

Thanks in advance!

Get it done properly if you are going to keep the car for a few years, there are plenty of mobile A/C guys about

as for the gas it uses - open the bonnet and there will be a warning label with the gas used, It's either on the bonnet on the bulkhead or on the slam panel (2013 should be a 134a system) 1234fy is the newer standard 2016/17 onwards

Be aware 1234yf is a more expensive gas so the cost is passed on

Thanks for the response! Yeah, it's hard to tell - Halfords does have a chart that states the 2012 + Auris have the newer gas - but they might be referring the hybrids. Many of the charts/articles out there seem to completely ignore the existence of the standard petrol engine!

I don't mind paying more for the gas, I'm just wary of paying Toyota £139 for what would be a £60/70 job (if it is the older, cheaper gas). I'll have another look in the engine bay for the sticker

Hi,

sticker very likely is located in the top side of the bonnet, hybrids 2010-2018 using Standard R134 gas but the oil is different, in general any AC specialist will know about your car and what gas and oil takes , therefore should be able to give you a quote. I use local Protyres garage for that purpose, once in 4 years, good job done every time and only cost me £60. Mote than half from Toyota. 👍

1234yf became a legal requirement for new cars from January 2017, but most manufacturers started using the new gas before this date - for example the 2015 i20 we bought new, used 1234yf.

It looks like the Hybrid one must use 1234yf, I've managed to find the sticker on mine (it was quite literally right above my head, on the bonnet!) and it's R-134a, and ND-OIL 8.

So seems like their £139 is a bit cheeky, given my car doesn't have the new fangled environmentally friendly gas.

A 2013 Auris is almost certainly R134a.  I wouldn't bother going to a Toyota dealer. Try to find a local aircon specialist who is working on these day in, day out.

Had my 2016 non hybrid Auris re-gassed last week at Toyota Steven Eagell Watford for £69.99.

Here is a photo of the A/C refrigerant gas sticker on my 2016 Auris Excel hybrid hatchback. (It’s physically under the bonnet - look up as you lift the bonnet). Mines got the fully automatic climate control system and is running on 470g of R134a gas. Hope this helps others. 🙂
