12V battery in Auris hybrid

Hi. I am trying to work out if the 12V Battery fitted in my 2016 Auris Excel hybrid hatchback is the original Battery, or if it’s a replacement. The car will be 5 years old next month. From past experience, 12V batteries last around 5 years. 

The Battery fitted in mine is a YUASA YBX3054 (12V 36AH)

What 12V battery brand does everybody else have in their Auris hybrids?

Looking at potential replacements there aren’t that many, given the batteries physical size and capacity, the choice seems to be somewhat limited.

Yuasa is a very good Battery and may well be the original. It looks like the Battery is under the bonnet, if so it’s likely to be a standard Battery and not an AGM battery which is used for safety reasons when the battery is in the boot ie mk1 Auris hybrids (the wife’s 2010 model) and I had a Gen3 Prius which is in the boot. They are about £135, so you have the much less priced model.                 
Is the battery causing problems? Batteries can last longer then the norm of 5 years, so why change when no problems? And especially why change now in the summer if no problems, at least I would be waiting until November or so for when the frost comes, which highlights any problems.                      
There are battery specialists, use the internet, reviews etc. A good supplier is TAYNA, in Abergele, North Wales. They have a web site, check them out. The do Mail order, and now the postal system seems to have settled to normal, if you order in the morning you may get next day delivery. I just spotted, you have already got Tyana in sight. After Yuasa, Varta has a good reputation.

I thought it looked to be in the car rather than under the bonnet tbh. The Battery also seems to be end vented via a tube and is classed as 'roll over proof'.

Mine is a hybrid so the 12V Battery is in the boot, on the right hand side, behind a removable plastic trim panel. 
 

Yes @Mooly mine has a push fit vent pipe which goes down through the floor pan.

Ok, if the Battery is in the boot then it needs to be an AGM type Battery, that is what would have been factory fitted.                  
If you need to replace and AGM Battery, replace only with AGM, and last time I checked Toyota dealers are very competitive on price, but always check.                   
The reason why AGM for why fit AGM when in car is well documented on here, but basically, it’s in case of an accident and the battery splits, it won’t spew acid all over the interior ie driver and passengers. Check it out yourself.

Looks non original to me, the oem usually has a yellow sticker and Japanese letters and less information. The vent I think I black too. Battery can lasts long time but also a very short, all depends of personal use of the car. My one is 11 years old and looks the oem one, not sure if been changed before but does not look like. 👍

If you have a driveway or garage you can prolong the life of your 12v Battery by using a CTEK Battery charger, as it reconditions the Battery as well as charges it. I’d suggest you could get 10yrs out of a good 12v if ‘maintained’ with one of these. At £60(ish) they are cheaper than a replacement battery and work on all cars (even EVs - they have 12v batteries too!)

You can get a cheap Autel Battery tester and from you now own you will know if you need to change the Battery

Worth checking Toyota dealer for Battery replacement. Was a (decent) fixed price - fitted with 5 year warranty - when I had mine replaced. 

 

Leaving the Hybrid parked (and not started) for a "long" period is hard on the tiny little 12v Battery running the alarm, remote unlock, etc... The "long" interval can be rather short if your Battery is getting on a bit. Otherwise it has an easy life compared to a 12v in a non-hybrid (no cranking the engine to start it!)

I bought a 2014 Auris Touring Sports Hybrid, when it was just under 3 years old (manufactured in Mar 2014, IIRC); it now has 165k (km) on the clock.

The 12V Battery has definitely not been replaced since I bought the car, and I am quite sure it is still the originally equipped OEM Battery. So likely 9 years. Photo below (and yes it's in the boot).

I had one issue back in Oct 2021, when the family had just returned from a chilly walk and we sat in the car for a while with the heat on thinking about where we were heading next, not sure for how long, 15 mins or so. Then when attempting to start the car got a load a blinking dash lights and control and clicking noises. No graceful warning indication of any kind, very alarming! Tried a few times and it was getting worse each time. After switching everything off manually (auto headlights/wipers, fan, cabin lights), and waiting a few mins doing nothing... It started OK, and then and no more issues...

...until a couple of months ago (Nov 2022), a similar situation, sat in the car parked listening to the radio, tried to start randomly blinking dash lights, except this time it needed a jump start. It's been OK since as long as we don't sit parked listening to the radio for too long!

I know it's probably really time to change the Battery, but would be curious if a full charge with a decent "smart charger" would give me another year or so. Has anyone tried this? I can get such a charger for about €40. And if you've done this how long would you get after fully charging before needing to do it again? I should disclose that I have also never charged or maintained this battery in any way at all.

If that idea is a waste of time at this stage, can anyone confirm if this battery is indeed an AGM battery (again see below)? I called my local Toyota dealer today and they quoted €180 supply only for the battery for my model. I asked was it a sealed AGM, and they said it was sealed. I didn't push for details. That price seems standard enough here for an AGM. But while I see the current one is a sealed battery (with the downward venting tube out the back of it), I really can't tell if it's AGM or not. Unfortunately web searches for any of the codes on it don't really turn up much. Also the owners manual is strangely vague about battery spec. 

Any online car parts sites I've found recommend a Bosch S4 (sealed but not AGM) for about €120 when I enter my make and model into their respective selector tools.

I'd be happy to get an AGM if that's what's spec'd, but I also don't want to throw away €60 for no reason... I really just want to know the actual spec.

Well I admit, that was a bit long winded!

I was really just frustrated with the lack of clearly defined spec, which prevented me from assessing prices online.

Anyway, just picked up the Battery from the dealer (and yes it is definitely AGM), who also gave a slight discount on price quoted (and I didn't even ask for that). So all in all a very fair price, for exactly the right Battery. So, as @Catlover noted, dealers can be competitive for these batteries, which was kind of a surprise to me.

For anyone who finds this and is uncertain about how tricky it might be to swap it out themselves, it's really very straightforward, just need a 10mm spanner, and the owner's manual gives simple instructions. Note the specific disconnection/reconnection sequence, don't over tighten things, and don't forget to replace the vent hose at the end.

Also for reference (and searchability) here are the specs of my original and new batteries. The model of the original was actually hidden below the clamping bar:

Replacement from Dealer: AGM Tech S34B20R 35Ah-272A BCI-340A EN 28800 - YZZPC

The morale of this for me is, to not blindly accept the "recommended as suitable" Battery offered by online sites. AGM is the correct choice for safety reasons, and the dealers seem to provide them for a reasonable price.

Hope this info helps some people in the future.

Thanks for sharing. 
When you seat in the car best to turn the car ON ( ready mode) and then do whatever you like, listening radio, using heating etc. If you only switch to acc mode one short press of start button you are depleting your 12v Battery and even new one won’t last long. 👍

The Battery is only 1/2 of regular car Battery.  The manufacturing date is on the top middle part of the yuasa Battery. Just look at the date and when you buy a new battery,  you should get a recent one.  Just like tires too
