Why can't the Auris 1.6 V-Matic's engine be remapped?

I'm a recent owner of a 2014 Auris in the UK but cannot find anything about remapping the 1.6 Valvematic petrol engine (post-2012).

The only performance upgrade I can find is a pedal box to improve transmission time, whereas the older VVT-i engine can be remapped to 137bhp (albeit only a bit higher than the 1.6 V-matic's stock 132bhp).

Any ideas why this is the case, along with any alternatives if a remap is simply not possible?

I have done no research on this, therefore this is only my opinion.

In theory, the ECU should be remappable however is there a demand in the market for it? Toyota ECU's are known in the industry to be quite hard to 'crack' in order to start remapping. With this in mind - I'm not sure any tuning company would want to pour their resources (and therefore money) into offering a service which may have little demand.

I looked into it briefly when I owned an Auris 1.6 Valvematic. You will never get very significant power gains from remapping a naturally aspirated petrol engine, and that coupled with the difficulty and probably very little demand for remapping the petrol Auris (as Phil suggests above) means no one really bothers to do it.

Would the pedal box help with rev hang? I feel like the slow gearshift (mainly 1 ->2 and 2->3) make the car feel very sluggish.

hi steve

the pedal box is good it reduces the  lag in the accelerator pedal

and makes the car more responsive

here is another option for you from tunit

https://tunit.com/results/?id=17447

That Optimum looks like an ideal bit of kit, cheers!

I believe so. From what I've read it might not remove rev hang completely but it should certainly make it feel a lot better.

Yeah that Optimum does look tempting but I'm concerned I've never seen anyone with real world reports on these, the figure look optimistic to me...

My previous car was a 110bhp TDi remapped to 144bhp (custom map with before and after dyno reading) with no other hardware mods and the difference was eye opening, I do miss the torque from that car but love the reliability of my 'simple' petrol engine.

I just cant see how they'd squeeze an extra 17bhp out of an NA petrol engine without a turbo to tweak but would love to be proved wrong.

Typically, a remap like this needs to be done with the ecu removed from the car to connect the chip is not a simple odb2 flash and go

Google 1ZR-FAE remap it's fitted to the Lotus so there are remaps

put some 98 Ron (premium) in the tank you may just lose the flat spot

Edit. Gains with a map 14 BHP and 21nm for £4-600

Ha! Wow, I never realised these engine were used by Lotus! I guess the power to weight ratio helps too.

many years ago i used the orignal tunit on a 2ltr diesel rover 25

the power / torque increase was amazing, when i sold the car i

found the dealer that was reselling it , when i spoke to them

he told me he couldn't believe how strongly the car pulled

and it took him by surprise when he put his foot down.

they arent cheap but you get what you pay for

Diesels are easy to tune, add a bit more boost and advance the timing, PSA 1.7  and Renault 1.5 and 1.9 respond well to tuning boxes

Petrol turbos are the same, but tend to run out of fuel at the higher end

1ZR-FAE is a NA petrol, so air in, air out and a bit of fuel

i have used the pedal box+ and they are also great to have fitted on your car

the amount of lag that is removed from the accelerator pedal is amazing

take a look at this link as the optimum plus

comes with an engine warranty as well

https://tunit.com/warranties/

this shows how much confidence the company has in its products
