Help swapping out odometer

Hi
Hoping someone can help point me in the right direction. I've imported my Rav 4 Luna Sport 2018 model from Ireland, into UK. To register the car in the UK I need to swap out the odometer to show MPH instead of the current KMPH.

I've been on to Toyota dealers but, the way their system works, they can effectively only guess at the right part number (by inputting a UK reg number for a model they think is the same but not sure, as the Luna Sport isn't sold in UK). That's a pricey gamble, so wondering if anyone has done this previously and knows how to find the right part number, or if there are conversion specialists out there that may be able to help?

It's a petrol/electric hybrid, automatic

Thanks in advance
Elaine

Do you still have the manual for it? Would be worth looking through it to see if there is a way in the car settings menu to change the units from kilometers to miles.

(Or our resident guru flash22 might be able to find it and post it! )

This one is not obvious but ridiculously simple - go into Settings > Detail settings > Units and change from km/h (km/l) to miles/h (mpg) and the odometer reading will change from km to miles as well. No hardware change required at all, and no odometer resetting or other nonsense either.

Begs the question, why your Toyota dealer did not know this simple change !!

Hi all

I appreciate the input, thanks to all trying to help.  Unfortunately the model where you switch digitally didnt come out until 2019 - mine is the 2018 model and is analogue, with a clock with physical markings, not a digital readout. 😞

If anyone has a 2018 model in the UK, petrol electric hybrid, automatic, it would be great to see a photo of your dash to see if it matches mine.  That way I might be able to get the right part number to order.

Any other advice much appreciated.

Elaine

Oh bother! As far as I knew / know, the odometer is a digital readout on the multi-information display on the 2017 / 2018 model.

As you suggest, it may help if you post a picture of your dash and the part you want to replace ...

And you say "mine is the 2018 model and is analogue, with a clock with physical markings" - do you mean odometer or speedometer?

Edit: does your dash not look like this?

I did a little more research, and yes, of course, you meant speedometer rather than odometer, and you stated in your initial post the you needed to convert from KPH to MPH.

The only requirement when importing a car from Ireland to the UK is to ensure that the speedometer gives the car's speed in miles per hour - because the speed limits across the UK are stated in miles per hour. As in the picture above (from the US as it happens) UK speedometers provide a dual readout - MPH in bigger digits; KPH in smaller digits - which is useful when UK cars are driven in the EU etc. If your car's speedometer provided a dual readout you'd be fine - the car is already right hand drive - and there'd be nothing more to be done.

But, for some unfathomable reason, the Irish appear to have elected to have kilometre only speedometers on newer cars - older cars were in MPH with KPH as a dual readout as per the UK. I suspect this is the challenge that you now seek to address.

I suspect that the only part swap available to a UK Toyota dealer would be to replace the whole instrument cluster - i.e. both dials and the MID - let's hope that I'm wrong.

Alternatively, there do appear to be companies out there who will take the speedometer apart and provide an overlay that gives a readout in MPH. So, yes, there do appear to be 'conversion specialists' out there. It would be a case of Googling and contacting them to find out what they can do and for what cost ...

Thanks Philip - really appreciate you taking the time to do the research!  And yes, so far all I've managed to work out is that it would need the whole instrument cluster to be swapped out, and, even if I elected to do this, Toyota can't guarantee that it would fit, and I'd be shelling out around £1,800 on a 'might work' solution.  Back to Googling for conversion specialist, or, re-export and sell back in Ireland!!

The cluster with the mid can be swapped as long as it has the same plugs, the cluster its self needs to be configured depending on if you have TSS, the mileage also need to be corrected

the internals of the cluster are common to a lot of cars the 18 on Yaris uses the same board but in a different housing, you can pick a cluster for £100-200 used you may also need to change your steering wheel controls, so you can access the menu

Mileage correction is not a problem, it takes 10-20 mins, I'm still working on the settings tho

Maybe a bit techy....................

If you can PM me your VIN i will be happy to look up parts for you

I realise that this is an old thread, but I have just rejoined the forum after a long absence and if it's of any use, I am in exactly the same boat as Elaine except my Rav4 Hybrid is 2017.  After 20 years working in Ireland, I am returning to the motherland in October.

I have found a company online who make a replacement "sticker" which gets over the MPH issue

https://lockwoodinternational.co.uk/product/toyota-rav4-mph-dial-part-no-c1932/

Turning to the issue of the odometer and fuel consumption etc, my RAV4 has only a choice of (for example) l/100km or km/l - there's no MPG option in the setting.

I've asked my local Toyota service if they can re-programme the cluster - they must be able to do so to some extent, because in the event they have to replace the cluster, they have to display the correct mileage - not just a zeroed Odometer.  Whilst I have my fingers crossed that they will be able to do this, I'd be very grateful for any insights into this.  Thanks

My understanding is that a UK registered car must be able to display it's speed in MPH - using the units displayed on speed limit signs and not requiring the driver to make the calculation as he/she goes along. So the 'sticker' options is absolutely fine.

Similarly, it is required that the Odometer shows the actual distance travelled - but that distance could be displayed in either miles or kilometres just so long as it is honest and accurate. I don't believe that you need do anything to the odometer at all. Leaving it as it is so that all the history is in the same distance unit may well be the better way to go - albeit that it may raise extra complications when you come to sell it on.

Well that's my understanding ... 😉

The Lockwood dials are not a sticker (decal) they are an actual plastic similar to the factory gauge faces

the gauges are pre-programmed there are a few different types, dealers can not program these, but they can do the mileage correction

get a set of UK/MPH gauges and get the mileage corrected what can be done over OBD2 with the correct tools

i can go into more technical detail if required - the base gauges and PCB are shared across many cars, including the yaris

Edit. Going off the info given here, 83800-42U40 upto 08/2017 - 83800-4A240 08/2017 onwards

Came across this post during a search for Rav4 cluster replacement.2017 Rav4 Canada fuel gauge stuck on E, no low fuel light. It was intermittent at first and seem related to low temperatures, had the problem for a couple winters (off and on) but now even with warmer temperatures is stuck on Empty . Did a couple test with techstream and points to the cluster (combination meter). I can get a used one very cheap,is it a way to read the original cluster and write the info to the old one or is it just the odometer that needs correction

Best Regards

Make sure it's the same part number, and get the mileage corrected - this can be done with the correct tool over obd2 or wiring direct to the PCB - but not with techstream

Thank you very much, would be like cloning the clusters or you only need to change the odometer. I was always under the impression the odometer would be stored in the ECU as well . Where do i find more info on the wiring for  read/write of the cluster and if possible the OBD2 tools

I must admit that I think / thought that the distance travelled is stored in the ECU and simply displayed on the multi-purpose display screen. I assume that there isn't a rolling digit style counter on a 2017 RAV4 - rather it's like the one below?

Yes that's the one

"Thank you for inquiring with TPD. The Instrument Cluster for your 2017 RAV4 is Part 838000R390KP. This part is on Backorder status at Toyota Canada with no ETA"

Maybe I'll get a used one from eBay and start playng with it

The Mileage aka odo is stored in the Cluster and ECU it's also stored in some other modules, the one in the cluster is in the flash what is programmed via the MCU

Ok thank you again I'll do a bit more research, maybe is just plug and play if the info is stored already in the ECU and or BCM or a way to master reset a used cluster and then maybe gets a refresh from ECU when connected

Thank and best regards

Hello Flash22

Did order a used cluster,do you have any wiring instructions and equipment used for read/write the eeprom ?
