Have just left my corolla for it’s first service got the technician to listen to the initial start up rattle of the ice.

apparently this is the high pressure fuel pump filling with fuel as I thought the 1.8 is a GDi engine as confirmed by the technician glad I am using esso supreme.

Hi,

if the car is 1.8 hybrid then engine has no high pressure fuel pump but fuel is delivered by multipoint fuel injection, fuel goes into the intake valves and there is only one fuel pump built into the tank., same as Prius 2016 onwards. Here it’s some more information:

2ZR-FXE[edit]

The Toyota 2ZR-FXE is a 1.8 L (1,798 cc) Atkinson cycle variant of the 2ZR-FE.[8] It has the same bore and stroke, but the compression ratio is increased to 13.0:1, and the inlet valve closing is retarded. The net result is that the engine has a greater effective expansion than compression. Output is 73 kW (98 hp; 99 PS) and 142 N⋅m (105 lb⋅ft) of torque, paired with electric motor/generators in the hybrid drive system; together the engine and electric motors produce up to 100 kW (134 hp; 136 PS) and 207 N⋅m (153 lb⋅ft). Maximum thermal efficiency is about 38.5%.[9]

For the 2016 Toyota Prius, output is 95 hp (71 kW) at 5200 rpm and 105 lb⋅ft (142 N⋅m) of torque at 3600 rpm, or when paired with electric motor/generators 71 hp (53 kW) and 120 lb⋅ft (163 N⋅m) of torque in the hybrid drive system; together the engine and electric motors produce up to 121 hp (90 kW). Maximum thermal efficiency is about 40%.

Is that not the engine that was in the hybrid auris.

the engine on mine looks like the fuel injectors enter straight into the head have also looked at the specs for the 1.8 corolla and it says direct injection where as for the 2.0 it does say multipont

the technician at listers said lots of people have complained about this rattle and he said it was the high pressure fuel pump seemed to know what he was talking about.

Hi, yes similar engine to Auris but reworked for 2016 and had been used in Prius, Corolla, Corolla Cross, CHR. Fuel is delivered via multipoint injection (port injection) and has no high pressure fuel pump, the 2.0 engine called dynamic force engine has both direct injection and port injection. High pressure fuel pump mounted on top of the engine. I don’t know why the dealer technician has explained to you exactly the other way around. 🤷‍♂️
