Avensis blue/white smoke but no oil or coolant loss help!!

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone could help me,recently bought a 2010 avensis TR 2.0 d4d with the 1ADFTV engine,116k miles,

Great car and i love it n all but recently started putting out blue/white smoke, sometimes a little sometimes a lot,had the mechanic put in a fuel and oil system cleaner and had the egr out to be cleaned which was very blocked,no difference at all..power and acceleration is fine,no noisey turbo or hard to start,no smoke on start up,only really happens when the car is up to tempreature, and the weirdest thing is that the oil or coolant level has not gone down whatsoever,no mayo on the oil cap or anything of the sort, also there is no light on the dash or fault codes stored so its very strange,so im not gonna lie,im very very puzzled haha,

Any help would be extremely appreciated,

Thank you guys 🙂

Sounds to me that with all functions operating normally, it could be pregnant with a baby Lexus! 🤣🤣

Irish car or imported originally  UK car?

It sounds to me similar to a DPF trying to regenerate.

p.s. welcome to TOC

Hi heidfirst, imported uk car from new, yeah thats what i was thinking aswell, but i find it strange that it would be sending out blue smoke as i thought that was indicative of ol burn?

Thank you very much for the reply by the way and the warm welcome 🙂

Would u not take off the dpf and bring it to one of those dpf specialists that put the dpf into a machine and connect it up and blow chemicals threw it I rang one local 2 my area and they said leave dpf up and they charge 140 quid 2 clean it . Might be the job .those dpf cleaned guys comes to your house or whatever and suppose 2 clean the dpf while on the car is a waste of money

Oh theres plenty of them around but i had the dpf pressures checked and rechecked by the main dealer and on a diagnostic computer i have myself and they all seem fine,I had all 4 injectors replaced due to one failing( i know i could have just replaced one but since they are common to go on these i just went full send haha) new fuel filter, ive had the egr cleaned twice, and no joy..my biggest gripe is the bluish/whitish smoke but theres no loss of oil or coolant..i just do not get it at all

I am not an expert, especially on diesels, but have you checked the turbo (seals), any parts where the oil and coolant can get into the combustion chamber, like the head gasket. So check the coolant system for combustion gasses, and oil for contamination.
The 1AD FTV is one of the engine AD engines known for head gasket issues, though the less for your engine compared to the 2.2 2AD.

Simple test: after driving a while, open the coolant expansion tank cap ( remember to wear gloves)  and if there is lot of pressure the head gasket is broken.

In the initial phase there is no oil in the coolant yet and the loss of the coolant is minimal.

Your answer is better detailed than mine. I think the OP and replies focus in different areas.

I agree.

The blue smoke could be from the turbo...

I don´t know the structure of the turbo in 1AD FTV engine but I think the coolant can´t get into the exhaust gas in the turbo?

I have some other vehicle (not car) with water cooled turbo and there is only in/out connections for the coolant in the cast body.

I thought that too at some point but as im not losing any oil or coolant and the fact that it happens every two days approx,i don't think it is..and also if it was the turbo it probably gotten worse at this stage..so i have no idea😔🙃

well i hear the 2.2 2ad engines give bother like injectors etc compared to the 1adftv engines that is the whole reason why i bought the avensis with the 1adftv 2.0 d4d engine plus i did plenty of research before buying one so i know what one is the best and gives the least amount of bother .most taxi men i know all drive the 1adftv 2.0 d4d engine cars they say there the best also

I have just joined this club as a curiosity to find out what this problem really is. It was first noted in the t180 owners at around 70-80000 miles. The problem shows itself when accelerating in 2 or 3 gear and is typical of a regeneration. This is when the diesel particulate filter (just after the turbo in the exhaust pipe) is choked and diesel is injected into the filter to create a fire and burn  out the carbon that is blocking the filter. in my opinion there is a design flaw on this car in which the diesel doesnt actually ignite but throws out this eye watering smoke as it hits the hot metal of the exhaust. I had a diagnostic test done and it showed a 0.5 bar pressure (7 pound) across the filter .ie it was well and truly blocked and the car constantly tried to regenerate when the conditions were right. This 0.5 bar of pressure was totaly chocking the gas flow and pressure of the turbo causing the engine to produce more carbon and dropping the mpg to 30 with a big power drop. These are just my opinions based on my experience and I am open to debate but I hope it helps you all.

Hello again everyone, apologies for bringing up an old topic, just said id let everyone know that i managed to solve the issue with the car and I'm really hoping it helps someone else if they are having a similar or the same issue..

So,brought the car to the mechanic a while ago and got it back yesterday, with the whole blowing bluish/greyish smoke issue coming out every so often with not even a lil burp of oil other than the usual manufacturer oil burn happening,i was told that the turbo seals were starting to get worse and worse so opted to have that done with a 2nd hand turbo(they are hard to come by new🙈) so keep an ear out for unusual noises or whining coming from the turbo as they are common on this type Avensis to fail, now im no mechanic whatsoever but as i previously stated before on this thread i was very suspicious the DPF had or was ready to throw in the towel, low and behold mechanic told me the DPF was in fact quite cheesed, told me the inner honeycomb like structure was covered in oil, made sense that turbo seals were leaking,****** oil onto the DPF therefore heating it up and burning it off hence the blue/greyish smoke,so i opted to do a DPF delete and map the software out, yeah yeah i know NCT/MOT failure is possible but not everyone can afford a new DPF given the fact, well here in Ireland they cost upwards of about 7-800 euro,as for the 5th injector that can be bypassed, and i can now confirm my issue is resolved!!! Just want to say thank you very very much to everyone on here who has given me advice and help,it means a lot👌🏻👌🏻now obviously i don't recommend everyone goes out and does a DPF delete but it is an option

Hope this helps guys,

Peace out✌🏻

I'm in the UK but not sure when the MOT will bring in this for testing .a buddy of mine had 2 get his dpf done away with and mapped out in one of those nissan jeepy kinda things .good job. I never a big fan of it but I know for sure as soon as I do away with that dpf I'd be the 1st to not pas mot for it
