Line sequence on Toyota Corolla E11 auto petrol mileage screen

Hello all

Can anyone tell me what these lines are on the lcd display? 

You press the button, to navigate from miles , to trip A , trip B , then these dashes appear.

I originally thought they were to do with the servicing timings, I thought they'd dissapear but they have stayed the same. 

I connected an OBD2 diagnostic reader to the car to try and extinguish them, but unable to.

IIRC those are the brightness controls - If you hold down the button when you're on that part, it cycles through different brightness levels, indicated by the lines.

It's a really stupid way of doing it tbh, but that's what they decided to do...
