Whirring when opening fuel tank

Hello guys,

I want to ask for help with my Auris (2018).

I fueled the tank today, quite a lot and when I opened the tank to check after a short drive, I was greeted by whirring noise. I know hissing sound, but this was new to me. Also bubbling followed short after. After a while it stopped and never occured again. Is that normal thing? Should I take it to the service?

And one more question about the fuel tank - does Auris have the "hole cover" or the tank hole is opened all the time? I fuel a lot of company cars and I don't know now if it was there on the Auris, or not.

Thank you for the help.

Not heard a whirring on mine. I’ve heard the filler cap “hiss” when opening it up, especially on hot days.

My 2016 Auris Excel hybrid hatchback has the metal fuel flap on the outside of the car, and the filler neck itself has a black plastic screw on filler cap fitted to it, which stops the fuel from sloshing out. The black plastic cap is on a lanyard to stop you losing the cap.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! So there is no blockage inside the neck. I was affraid, that it fell down and something broke, because during the filling fuel pistol went inside a bit, so I guess it was just settling in.

Yeah, the hiss is there on mine quite regularly, but this time it was accompanied with a sound like a small motor, or propeller running. I asked Toyota and they told me it should be probably fuel pump doing some work, guess it could be as I heard some bubbling.

Thank you!

Thanks!

Yes, I can go quite a lot after the pistol stops first time. I can drive like 50 km before the gauge start moving.

Don't over fill your gas tank, you can damage EVAP system.

Oh oh...

How to tell if it's damaged? I've done it for years 😕

Newer cars can show "check engine" lights. On older cars it can cause some leaks.

So if no check engine light on Auris, then I'm good if I stop now?

Yes, don’t worry about it I also do sometimes and no trouble. If there are any issues you will notice for sure, difficult start, rough idle, poor acceleration etc, engine management light and fault codes. Best to stop when petrol pump clicks or just round it to the nearest sum, like for example £23.56 can easily do to £24.00 no trouble. Filling up to the brim and fuel start pouring out is the thing that should be avoided and when eventually can get into trouble with fuel vapour canister. 👍

Toyota car care nut on YouTube, is an American mechanic. He has explained what the different sound that the hybrids make. Like the fuel system and that you shouldn’t leave the filler cap off for 30 minutes or more.

Another one is the brakes building up pressure when you open the door, before you start.

Also explained what the 4 drive modes and B do.

My Auris hybrid 2015 also has vacuum sounds when first time I open the fuel tank. Occasionally we hear nothing. It is a part of modern fuel line vapour recovery system.
